What is a per diem auto body technician?

A Per Diem Auto Body Technician is a skilled tradesperson who repairs and restores vehicles on an as-needed, daily basis rather than as a full-time or permanent employee. 'Per diem' means 'per day,' so these technicians are typically hired temporarily to cover staff shortages, handle increased workloads, or complete specific projects. Their responsibilities include assessing damage, removing and replacing parts, repairing dents, repainting surfaces, and ensuring vehicles meet safety and aesthetic standards. This flexible work arrangement allows both the technician and the employer to adapt to changing business needs.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a per diem auto body technician?

To thrive as a Per Diem Auto Body Technician, you need expertise in automotive repair, refinishing, and dent removal, along with a relevant technical certification or vocational training. Familiarity with tools such as frame machines, spray booths, and computerized estimating systems like CCC ONE is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and strong problem-solving skills help technicians deliver high-quality work efficiently. These skills ensure vehicles are restored to safety and aesthetic standards while meeting deadlines and customer expectations.

How does working as a per diem auto body technician differ from a full-time position?

As a Per Diem Auto Body Technician, your schedule is typically more flexible, allowing you to work on an as-needed basis rather than adhering to a fixed weekly routine. This means you'll often step in to handle increased workloads or cover for absent staff, which requires adaptability and the ability to quickly integrate with different teams. While you may not have the same long-term projects as full-time employees, you’ll still collaborate closely with other technicians, estimators, and shop managers to ensure repairs meet quality standards. This role is ideal for those seeking variety and independence, but it may also mean less predictability in hours and workload.
