What is a per diem athletic trainer?

A Per Diem Athletic Trainer is a certified healthcare professional who provides athletic training services on an as-needed or temporary basis, rather than as a full-time or regularly scheduled employee. They may be called in to cover sporting events, practices, or fill in for staff absences. Their duties include injury prevention, assessment, and emergency care for athletes. This flexible arrangement allows organizations to meet their athletic healthcare needs without maintaining a permanent position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem athletic trainer?

To thrive as a Per Diem Athletic Trainer, you need a solid background in injury prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in athletic training or a related field and certification from the Board of Certification (BOC). Familiarity with electronic medical records, taping/bracing techniques, and emergency response protocols is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and the ability to communicate effectively with athletes, coaches, and medical professionals make someone stand out in this position. These skills and qualities are crucial for providing quality care, quick decision-making, and adapting to varying schedules and environments.

How does the schedule and workflow differ for a per diem athletic trainer compared to a full-time position?

As a per diem athletic trainer, you can expect a highly flexible schedule, often working on an as-needed basis to cover events, games, or staff shortages. Unlike full-time roles, your hours and assignments may vary week to week, and you'll need to quickly adapt to different teams, facilities, and protocols. This flexibility can offer valuable exposure to diverse athletic settings but may require strong communication skills and the ability to integrate rapidly with new colleagues. Many trainers appreciate the varied experiences, though maintaining consistent income and benefits can be a challenge.
