President, West Penn Hospital


Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and President of AHN Hospitals, the President, West Penn Hospital will be highly focused on achieving and exceeding objectives in patient satisfaction and quality, operational and financial performance, stakeholder engagement, and leading transformational change in support of core objectives. This senior leader will help drive AHN's pacesetter role within the Living Health Strategy by creating a new health experience that seamlessly blends clinician aspects and is customized to patients' needs and preferences. This key leader will be highly focused on the achievement of operational excellence for people, service, quality, growth, and finance. The incumbent will lead and provide oversight, in partnership with hospital and enterprise executive leadership, for all activities in fulfilling the mission to provide quality healthcare, further healthcare education and research, develop community health programs, support key service lines, integrate shared system-wide functions, support centers of excellence, focus on clinical outcomes, improve employee engagement and patient and physician satisfaction, and improve all operating measures. A critical component of this role will be close partnership with other AHN hospital presidents to ensure alignment, consistency, and shared accountability across the network. The successful candidate must be able to influence and collaborate across a highly matrixed environment, driving systemwide cohesion while advancing West Penn's unique strengths and priorities.

West Penn Hospital

A key facility across Allegheny Health Network, West Penn Hospital is one of the region's oldest and most historically significant healthcare institutions. Founded in 1848, it became Pittsburgh's first chartered public hospital and has functioned as a major clinical and educational hub for more than a century. Today, West Penn operates as a 355-bed facility with 1,100+ physicians and 2,000+ employees.  West Penn is recognized for its comprehensive service lines, including cancer care, cardiology, women's health, burn care, orthopedics, neurology, gastrointestinal care, emergency medicine, bariatrics, and obstetrics. It hosts the only pediatric burn center in western Pennsylvania, verified by both the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons, and its birthing center welcomes ~4,000 newborns each year, with access to a Level III NICU. As part of AHN, the hospital participates in large-scale clinical collaborations and research initiatives, and its care teams emphasize personalized, multidisciplinary treatment supported by access to advanced technologies. The Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Fifteen years of progressive experience in healthcare leadership, including at least five years in a senior executive role within a not-for-profit environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading in turnaround and growth situations, with a focus on long-term institutional success and a proven track record of implementing significant, sustainable change.
  • Experience working within a multi-institutional healthcare system and exposure to an academic medical setting.
  • Strong financial acumen with a business-, quality-, mission-, and results-focused orientation; proven success in growing programs, services, market share, and profitability.
  • A strong, positive track record in physician and medical staff relationships; experience expanding clinical services and operating effectively within a matrixed environment.
