Job description

Part Time Bus Driver

Penn Charter seeks a part-time Bus Driver to provide transportation for school day, after-school and athletic activities. Candidates for this position must be committed to safety, customer service and have genuine, caring attitudes for children. Candidates must possess a CDL License with school bus endorsement and passenger endorsement; a current PA license, clean driving record and have experience working with children in schools.

Bus Drivers are paid overtime rates to cover field trips outside of regularly assigned shifts. Penn Charter will provide training and cover licensing renewal fees for qualified candidates who possess a CDL license.

Essential Functions:

  • Transport authorized students to and from school, following a pre-planned route according to a definite time schedule (AM & PM routes).
  • Obey all traffic laws, specifically those pertaining to school buses.
  • Observe all mandatory safety regulations for buses including but not limited to child safety equipment (i.e. car seats booster seats, safety vests).
  • Maintain order and discipline when students are on the bus.
  • Report undisciplined students to the proper administrator.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
  • Complete all pre- and post-trip inspections and reports any mechanical problems immediately.
  • Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports.
  • Enforce regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
  • Ability to safely evacuate all passengers in an emergency vehicular situation.
  • Maintain and updates all bus licenses and certifications.
  • Other associated duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.

  • Steadiness under pressure.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift at least 20 pounds.
  • Ability to walk, stand, or kneel for extended periods of time.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma; preference given to those having a minimum of two years college.
  • Valid and current PA driver's license.
  • Valid and current CDL license with school bus endorsement and passenger endorsement.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass drug screenings (pre and post) on a random basis as determined by the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Previous experience with children preferred.
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of Quakerism and Quaker education.
