What is a peer learning assistant?

Peer Learning Assistants (PLAs) are students who help facilitate learning among their peers by supporting classroom instruction, leading study sessions, and providing academic guidance. They collaborate closely with faculty and students to create a supportive learning environment, often clarifying course material and encouraging active participation. PLAs are typically trained in communication and teaching strategies to effectively assist their classmates. This role not only helps other students succeed but also provides PLAs with valuable leadership and teaching experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a peer learning assistant?

To thrive as a Peer Learning Assistant, you need a strong grasp of subject matter, effective tutoring techniques, and typically a solid academic record in the relevant discipline. Familiarity with learning management systems, online collaboration platforms, and tutoring resources is often required. Strong communication, patience, and approachability help you connect with students and facilitate their learning. These skills and qualities are essential for supporting student success and fostering a positive, collaborative learning environment.

How does a peer learning assistant typically collaborate with faculty and students during a semester?

Peer Learning Assistants (PLAs) work closely with both faculty members and student peers to enhance the learning environment. They often attend class sessions, help facilitate small group discussions, and provide feedback to instructors about student understanding and engagement. PLAs act as approachable resources for students outside of class, often hosting review sessions or drop-in hours. Effective collaboration requires strong communication skills and the ability to foster an inclusive, supportive atmosphere, making teamwork and adaptability essential traits for success in this role.

DEPARTMENT Writing Center

REPORTS TO Kristi Girdharry, kgirdharry@babson.edu

PAY RATE $20/hour

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Babson College Writing Center is a dynamic academic support center and peer learning community. As a Peer Consultant in Writing, you will work one-on-one with fellow Babson students to help them grow as writers-from brainstorming and drafting all the way through revision and editing. This is a meaningful, skill-building role that strengthens your own writing, communication, and leadership capabilities while directly supporting your peers.

The Writing Center serves students across all disciplines, supporting work ranging from course papers and case analyses to cover letters, business plans, and graduate school applications. Our consultants are carefully selected undergraduate writers who are trained to meet each student where they are and help them make informed, effective choices in their work.

A unique opportunity for current Babson undergraduates, in order to apply for this role, you must have taken WRT4602: Practicum in Peer Consulting and Writing.

  • Support writers through all stages of the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, and editing
  • Help students with a wide range of writing tasks, including course papers, business plans, case analyses, essays, resumes, cover letters, and more
  • Use a collaborative, non-directive approach: ask guiding questions and offer constructive feedback rather than editing for the student
  • Manage appointment scheduling and student accounts through WConline, our online scheduling platform
  • Complete brief Client Report Forms after each session to document work and support continuity of care
  • Participate in mandatory staff meetings and ongoing trainings that deepen knowledge of writing pedagogy and Writing Center theory
  • Observe all Writing Center policies, including the shift cancellation policy, appointment etiquette, and confidentiality guidelines
  • May optionally assist with classroom visits, including WRT courses and other classes to introduce students to Writing Center services, and/or contribute to Writing Center outreach and programming, which may include social media content, workshops, and campus events
  • Assume additional responsibilities as required.

  • Ability to manage time effectively, balance consulting hours with academic responsibilities, and arrive prepared and on time for all shifts
  • Comfort working with students on a wide range of writing assignments
