Transload Operator

Department: Operations

Reports To: Operations Manager / Lead Operator

Position Summary

The Transload Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient transloading of bulk commodities between railcars, trucks, and shipping containers. This position supports daily rail operations, grain transfer systems, and material handling activities while ensuring compliance with company safety standards, railroad regulations, and customer requirements. The Operator is expected to work in a fast-paced industrial environment and maintain a strong commitment to safety, productivity, and operational excellence.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Rail & Transloading Operations

· Perform transloading of bulk grain and non-hazardous liquid products between railcars, trucks, and containers.

· Apply proper rail safety procedures including blue flag protection, derailer placement, and railcar securement.

· Safely operate a Trackmobile to move and position railcars as required.

· Open/close railcar hatches, gates, and valves in accordance with product handling procedures.

· Connect and disconnect hoses and transfer lines.

· Operate pumps, conveyors, augers, and associated transfer systems.

· Inspect railcars and containers prior to loading/unloading.

· Monitor transfer rates and ensure proper product flow.

Grain System & Control Operations

· Operate grain handling systems including conveyors, legs, and loadout systems.

· Monitor control room systems and adjust equipment settings to maintain efficiency.

· Perform product sampling and quality checks as required.

· Verify weights and documentation to ensure accurate shipments.

Equipment Operation

· Operate forklifts, jockey trucks, and container handlers/top lifts safely and efficiently.

· Conduct daily equipment inspections and report deficiencies.

· Maintain proper staging and organization of containers and trailers.

Safety & Compliance

· Follow all OSHA, railroad, and company safety policies.

· Utilize required PPE at all times.

· Participate in safety meetings and training.

· Report unsafe conditions, near-misses, and incidents immediately.

· Maintain spill prevention and housekeeping standards (5S).

Facility Maintenance & Housekeeping

· Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of transfer equipment.

· Maintain clean and organized work areas.

· Assist with preventative maintenance activities.

Qualifications

· High School Diploma or GED required.

· Ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.

· Ability to pass pre-employment screening (background, drug screen, physical).

· Previous experience in rail, grain handling, bulk transfer, or heavy equipment operation preferred.

· Mechanical aptitude and basic troubleshooting skills.

· Basic computer skills (email, data entry, Outlook, Excel).

Physical Requirements

· Ability to climb railcars and ladders.

· Ability to lift and maneuver hoses and equipment (up to 50 lbs).

· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

· Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.

· Ability to work at heights when required.

Work Environment

Industrial rail yard and grain handling facility. Exposure to dust, noise, moving equipment, and outdoor elements. This position works a rotating shift schedule that may include both first and second shift hours. Overtime, weekend work, and flexible scheduling may be required based on rail schedules, customer demand, and operational needs. Typical second shift hours are 3:00PM-11:00PM. Shift assignments are based on business needs and may change with advance notice.

Operator I / Operator II Progression Path Operator I – Entry / Developing Operator

· Performs transloading tasks under supervision.

· Qualified on forklifts and basic material handling equipment.

· Learning grain system operations and rail safety procedures.

· Demonstrates adherence to safety policies and housekeeping standards.

· Completes required training and certifications.

Operator II – Fully Qualified Operator

· Independently performs full transloading operations.

· Qualified and proficient in Trackmobile operations.

· Capable of operating grain control systems and troubleshooting minor issues.

· Demonstrates strong understanding of rail safety protocols and blue flag procedures.

· Trains and mentors Operator I personnel.

· Consistently meets productivity and safety expectations.

Advancement from Operator I to Operator II is based on demonstrated competency, safety performance, equipment qualification, and leadership behaviors as determined by management.

In addition to the above job duties, employees will be expected to work in various capacities at other locations within the company based on the needs of the company.
