How much do pediatric radiology jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for pediatric radiology in the United States is $400,000.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $400,000.00 and $400,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by pediatric radiologists when interpreting imaging studies in children?

Pediatric radiologists often encounter challenges such as interpreting images with limited patient cooperation, adjusting imaging protocols for smaller body sizes, and differentiating between normal developmental variations and pathology unique to children. Collaboration with pediatricians and technologists is crucial to ensure accurate diagnoses and minimize radiation exposure. Additionally, staying updated on advances in imaging technology and pediatric-specific protocols is essential for providing the best care in a fast-evolving field.

What is the difference between Pediatric Radiology vs Pediatric Nuclear Medicine?

AspectPediatric RadiologyPediatric Nuclear Medicine
Required CredentialsMedical degree, radiology residency, fellowship in pediatric radiology, board certificationMedical degree, nuclear medicine residency, fellowship in pediatric nuclear medicine, board certification
Work EnvironmentHospitals, imaging centers, clinics focusing on pediatric imagingHospitals, specialized nuclear medicine departments, pediatric clinics
Industry UsageCommonly used for diagnosing structural issues via X-rays, MRIs, CT scansUsed for functional imaging, detecting metabolic and physiological processes

Both Pediatric Radiology and Pediatric Nuclear Medicine require specialized training and certification. Pediatric Radiology focuses on imaging techniques like X-rays and MRIs to diagnose structural issues in children, while Pediatric Nuclear Medicine uses radioactive tracers to assess physiological functions. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right specialty for specific diagnostic needs.

What is pediatric radiology?

Pediatric radiology is a specialized branch of radiology focused on diagnosing and treating diseases and conditions in infants, children, and adolescents using medical imaging techniques. Pediatric radiologists are trained to interpret images such as X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs, taking into account the unique needs of growing bodies. They work closely with pediatricians and other specialists to ensure accurate diagnoses and minimize radiation exposure for young patients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pediatric Radiologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pediatric Radiologist, you need board certification in radiology with subspecialty fellowship training in pediatric imaging, along with deep knowledge of pediatric anatomy and pathology. Proficiency in using advanced imaging modalities such as MRI, CT, ultrasound, and PACS systems is essential. Exceptional attention to detail, communication skills, and empathy are crucial for accurately diagnosing conditions and working effectively with young patients and their families. These skills ensure precise diagnoses, minimize radiation exposure, and foster trust in sensitive pediatric healthcare environments.
