Pharmacist Specialist – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pediatrics Clinical Pharmacist Specialist plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they perform complex clinical review and medication therapy optimization according to strict medical, legal, and professional pharmaceutical standards. They are responsible for exercising professional judgment during therapeutic evaluations, ensuring accurate medication dosing, delivering age-specific care, and maintaining seamless workflow collaboration within the multidisciplinary pediatric department.

A typical day for a Pharmacist Specialist may include:

• Prepares therapeutic assessments for neonatal and pediatric patients, clearly explains the process, and collaborates with clinicians for optimized medication administration
• Operates diagnostic tools, electronic health systems, computers, and medical applications necessary to ensure a safe and accurate therapeutic and monitoring procedure
• Assist physicians and independent practitioners during clinical rounds and interdisciplinary planning by tracking, calculating, or monitoring medication activities
• Sets up evidence-based protocols and other clinical guidelines following standard safety practices, handles drug evaluations, and reviews profiles to assist with complex therapies
• Calibrates, maintains, and adjusts clinical initiatives, and reports adverse drug events, medication incidents, or other problems immediately to the appropriate support or departmental leadership
• Monitors and calls out laboratory and therapeutic readings, alerting the healthcare team immediately to any changes in patient condition
• Utilizes hospital pharmacy and documentation systems to enter accurately identified and verified profiles of patients, and retrieves old medical records and charts when necessary
• Demonstrates working knowledge of clinical protocols including cost-savings initiatives, performance improvements, safety, and quality enhancement techniques
• Collaborates professionally in an intensive, emergency, or inpatient pediatric environment, working in close cooperation with physicians, nurses, and other technical staff

To be considered for this Pharmacist Specialist opportunity:

• Graduate with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy
• Problem-solving, critical thinking, decisive judgment, collaboration, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
• Active, unrestricted New Jersey Pharmacist License or eligibility to obtain licensure before starting
• Completion of a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency and a PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency OR completion of a PGY1 Residency with a pediatric focus at a dedicated children's hospital
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in pediatric clinical pharmacy practice in lieu of residency training is acceptable
• Board Certification in Pediatric Pharmacy Specialty (BCPPS) is preferred
• Experience supporting PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Programs or contributing to institutional quality initiatives is preferred
