Job Description – Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Registered Nurse (Cath Lab RN)

Facility: Strong Memorial Hospital

 Position Summary:

Strong Memorial Hospital is seeking an experienced Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Registered Nurse (Cath Lab RN) to provide specialized nursing care for patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures. The Cath Lab RN will collaborate with interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, radiologic technologists, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to deliver safe, high-quality patient care throughout the procedural continuum. Candidates must have at least two years of Cath Lab experience, be moderate sedation trained, and possess strong critical care/cardiac and dysrhythmia management experience.

 Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures.
  • Perform pre-procedure patient assessments, review medical histories, verify informed consent, and prepare patients for cardiac procedures.
  • Assist physicians during coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), cardiac catheterization, pacemaker and ICD implantation, peripheral vascular procedures, and other cardiovascular interventions.
  • Administer and monitor moderate sedation in accordance with hospital policies and established nursing standards.
  • Continuously monitor patients' cardiac rhythms, hemodynamic status, oxygenation, and vital signs throughout procedures.
  • Recognize and respond promptly to cardiac dysrhythmias, hemodynamic instability, and procedural emergencies.
  • Administer cardiac medications, IV fluids, anticoagulants, and emergency medications as prescribed.
  • Operate and assist with specialized cardiac monitoring equipment, hemodynamic monitoring systems, and emergency resuscitation equipment.
  • Maintain a sterile procedural environment and ensure adherence to infection prevention and patient safety standards.
  • Collaborate with cardiologists, anesthesiologists, radiologic technologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure efficient patient care.
  • Provide post-procedure monitoring, assess vascular access sites, manage hemostasis devices, and educate patients regarding discharge instructions and follow-up care.
  • Document nursing assessments, medications, procedural events, and patient responses accurately in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Participate in emergency cardiac interventions, including STEMI activations and other urgent cardiovascular procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies, AHA guidelines, Joint Commission standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, continuing education, and departmental competency programs.
  • Assist with inventory management, equipment readiness, and maintaining Cath Lab supplies.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.
  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory experience.
  • Moderate Sedation training – Required.
  • Critical Care or Cardiac nursing experience – Required.
  • Experience recognizing and managing cardiac dysrhythmias.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications (AHA preferred).
Schedule:
  • 36–40 hours per week (preferred)
  • 4 × 10-hour shifts or 3 × 12-hour shifts
  • Typical shift times:
    • 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM
    • 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
  • On-call, weekend, holiday, and emergency coverage may be required based on departmental needs.
