What is a PCB project manager?

PCB Project Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and delivery of printed circuit board (PCB) projects. They coordinate between design, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure projects meet specifications, timelines, and budgets. Their role includes managing resources, addressing technical challenges, and communicating with stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes. Strong organizational, technical, and communication skills are essential for this position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB project manager?

To thrive as a PCB Project Manager, you need expertise in electronics engineering, project management fundamentals, and a solid understanding of PCB design and manufacturing processes, often backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with PCB design software (such as Altium Designer or OrCAD), project management tools (like MS Project or Jira), and certifications such as PMP are highly valuable. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage client expectations. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet technical specifications, which is critical for successful PCB development.

How does a PCB project manager typically coordinate with engineering and manufacturing teams during a project lifecycle?

A PCB Project Manager acts as a central point of contact between engineering design teams, manufacturing units, and sometimes clients, ensuring clear communication and alignment on project goals. They facilitate regular meetings, track timelines, and promptly address any design or production challenges that arise. This role requires balancing technical constraints, budget considerations, and deadlines while keeping all stakeholders informed and engaged. Close collaboration helps to minimize errors, manage changes efficiently, and ensure the final product meets quality standards.

Job description

SEL is seeking a PCB Designer to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment designing printed circuit boards for high-reliability applications. In this role, you will contribute to the full PCB design lifecycle, partnering closely with engineers to create manufacturable, testable, and robust designs that meet demanding performance and quality requirements.
If you are an innovative, detail-oriented designer who thrives on solving complex layout challenges and delivering high-quality designs, this position is for you.
As a PCB Designer, a typical day might include the following:
  • Design and develop PCB layouts from schematics under the mentorship of experienced Designers and Engineers.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers to translate schematic intent into reliable PCB designs.
  • Schedule and lead design review meetings for assigned projects, incorporating feedback and driving design improvements.
  • Apply engineering change orders (ECOs) to PCB layouts and associated documentation.
  • Perform component placement, routing, and design rule implementation with attention to signal integrity, power integrity, and manufacturability.
  • Perform Layout based simulations.
  • Generate fabrication and assembly documentation (Gerbers, drawings, BOMs) to support manufacturing.
  • Support PCB fabrication, assembly, and test by working with internal teams and external vendors to resolve design issues.
  • Adhere to and help maintain PCB design standards and IPC guidelines.

This job might be for you if:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering discipline, OR equivalent professional experience
  • Experience with CAD tools (such as Allegro, Xpedition, Altium, Solidworks, or similar CAD platforms).
  • Experience creating and managing ECAD libraries (symbols, footprints, and components).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple designs and deadlines.
  • Value to provide unmatched customer service.

What Sets This Role Apart:
  • Opportunity to work on complex, high variety, high-reliability products.
