What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB Contract Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Contract Engineer, you need expertise in electronic circuit design, PCB layout, manufacturing processes, and typically hold a degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Proficiency with design software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, along with familiarity with IPC standards and manufacturing documentation, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial for managing client requirements and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure the production of reliable, manufacturable PCBs that meet client specifications and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in PCB contract manufacturing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in PCB contract manufacturing often encounter challenges such as tight production deadlines, maintaining quality standards, and coordinating effectively with clients and suppliers. Managing multiple projects simultaneously can be demanding, especially when dealing with last-minute design changes or component shortages. To address these challenges, strong project management skills, clear communication, and a proactive approach to problem-solving are essential. Building robust relationships with reliable suppliers and using modern tracking tools can also help streamline workflow and ensure quality and timely delivery.

What is a PCB contract?

A PCB contract refers to an agreement between a client and a manufacturer for the production and assembly of printed circuit boards (PCBs). These contracts outline the specifications, quantities, delivery schedules, pricing, and quality requirements for the PCBs to be manufactured. PCB contract manufacturing allows companies to outsource the complex and resource-intensive process of PCB fabrication and assembly to specialized third-party providers, ensuring high quality and efficient production. This arrangement is common in the electronics industry, where rapid prototyping and scalable manufacturing are essential.

What is the difference between Pcb Contract vs Pcb Assembler?

As a technically hands-on director, you'll define RF test strategies, ensure rigorous performance verification, and guide your team through complex RF design challenges. You will drive operational excellence across the department-setting technical priorities, establishing best practices for RF testing, overseeing contract manufacturers, mentoring engineers, and ensuring seamless integration across electrical, mechanical, software, payload, and systems engineering teams.
We're looking for a deeply technical, solutions-oriented leader with extensive hands-on RF and Electrical experience, strong people management skills, and a passion for advancing space-based RF technology.
As the Director, RF Electrical Engineering , your main responsibilities will be:
RF Technical Leadership:
  • Provide technical direction for RF Front End (RFFE) and Software Defined Radio (SDR) Hardware architectures, ensuring designs meet mission performance requirements.
  • Define RF performance test strategies and scope test campaigns to verify critical specifications including sensitivity, Noise Figure, Spur-Free Dynamic Range (SFDR), and signal quality
  • Establish RF testing best practices and ensure the team properly characterizes RFFE and SDR performance through conducted/radiated measurements, spectrum analysis, and anechoic chamber testing.
  • Review and approve RF link budgets, interference analyses, trade studies, and design decisions at PDR/CDR milestones.
  • Stay hands-on with complex RF problems-troubleshooting performance issues, guiding design optimization, and validating test approaches.
  • Drive EMI/EMC compliance strategies and mitigation techniques for flight hardware.

Electrical Engineering Leadership:
  • Oversee the design of digital, analog, and power electronics for satellite flight hardware, including review and approval of schematics, block diagrams, PCB layouts, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
  • Work closely with PCB Contract Manufacturers (CMs) to ensure quality control, address technical issues, and ensure timely delivery of flight hardware.
  • Oversee first article hardware unit testing programs, including test inventory management, reception inspection, burn-in testing, thermal validation, and hardware checkouts.
