How much do pcb component engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for pcb component engineer in the United States is $53.63, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $43.27 and $62.26 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB Component Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Component Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, component selection, and circuit design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD tools like Altium Designer or OrCAD, as well as knowledge of component databases and industry standards, is essential. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills. These skills ensure reliable PCB designs, timely project delivery, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.

How does a PCB Component Engineer typically collaborate with design and manufacturing teams during a project?

A PCB Component Engineer works closely with both design and manufacturing teams to ensure that selected components are compatible with the overall board layout and can be sourced reliably. They review design schematics, provide input on component selection based on availability and lifecycle, and help resolve any issues related to part obsolescence or compliance. Regular meetings and cross-functional communication are essential, as the engineer acts as a technical bridge, ensuring smooth transitions from design to production while mitigating risks related to components.

What does a PCB Component Engineer do?

A PCB Component Engineer is responsible for selecting, evaluating, and managing electronic components used in printed circuit board (PCB) designs. They ensure that components meet design requirements, are available from suppliers, and comply with industry standards and regulations. Their duties often include maintaining component libraries, working with design and procurement teams, and helping resolve issues related to component lifecycle or obsolescence. This role helps ensure that PCBs are reliable, manufacturable, and cost-effective.

What is the difference between Pcb Component Engineer vs Pcb Design Engineer?

AspectPcb Component EngineerPcb Design Engineer
Primary FocusSelecting, testing, and qualifying electronic components for PCBsCreating PCB layouts and schematics based on specifications
Required SkillsComponent datasheets, testing, and validationCAD tools, circuit design, and layout skills
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing, R&D labsDesign offices, engineering teams
CertificationsRelevant electronics or engineering certificationsCAD and design software certifications

While both roles are integral to PCB development, the Pcb Component Engineer focuses on selecting and qualifying components, ensuring compatibility and reliability. In contrast, the Pcb Design Engineer concentrates on creating the physical layout and schematic design of the PCB. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or collaboration point within electronics development.

Job description

Please Note: To conform with the United States Government Space Technology Export Regulations, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., conditional resident, asylee or refugee (protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

At CesiumAstro, we are developers and pioneers of out-of-the-box communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We take pride in our dynamic and cross-functional work environment, which allows us to learn, develop, and engage across our organization. If you are looking for hands-on, interactive, and autonomous work, CesiumAstro is the place for you. We are actively seeking passionate, collaborative, energetic, and forward-thinking individuals to join our team.

We are looking to add a Senior PCB Designer II (Power) to our team. If you are excited about working in a startup environment, have a strong work ethic, and are passionate about cutting-edge electronics, we would like to hear from you.

In this position, you will perform PCB design for modern digital, analog, and power electronics circuits for ground, airborne, and space applications. Candidates should be comfortable with a varied workflow that may involve multitasking between different PCB designs, schematic symbol review, PCB footprint creation, library management, design file release into product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and production support. This position will work closely with analog and power electronics engineers, mechanical and manufacturing engineers to implement PCB designs for quick prototyping and volume production that meet design for manufacturability (DFM), design for cost (DFC), and design for testability (DFT).
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Own PCB designs for power supply modules and mixed-signal cards from beginning to end, including conducting design reviews for component placement, routing, and fabrication file reviews for DFM, DFC, and DFT.
  • Perform complex digital, analog and power electronics PCB design in Altium Designer, working closely with power electronics, manufacturing, and mechanical design engineers.
  • Generate mechanical 3D models and work with mechanical engineers to ensure compliance with mechanical and environmental requirements.
  • Generate and release Assembly Drawings, Fabrication Drawings, and PCB fabrication files (Gerbers, ODB++).
  • Review schematic symbols and generate IPC compliant PCB component footprints.
  • Participate in full product lifecycle development from board design to release into manufacturing and production support.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate's degree in Electronics Engineering Technology or similar.
  • +7 years of experience as a PCB Designer.
  • Strong experience with Altium Designer.
  • Strong experience with PCB design with a focus on digital and power electronics. This includes understanding of critical component placement and routing for analog and power electronics circuits that include power converters, gate driver, EMI filter, analog and digital controllers.
  • Experience with shielding and PCB design to mitigate EMI and crosstalk.
  • Knowledge of current density requirements for high current circuits, including strong understanding of via selection and power/ground plane design to meet signal integrity, power integrity, and thermal management.
  • Experience with high-reliability, aerospace, and/or IPC Class 3 designs.
  • Strong experience with design for manufacturability (DFM), design for cost (DFC), and design for testability (DFT).
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
$32.82 - $42.67 an hour
