Qualifications:
Payroll Specialist - Key Responsibilities & Qualifications (2026)
Key Responsibilities:
  • Administer and process biweekly payroll for all school district staff.
  • Maintain and audit employee records to ensure accurate payroll data.
  • Manage employee benefits including health, dental, vision, retirement, FMLA, and other leave programs.
  • Serve as a liaison between employees and benefit providers.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to payroll and benefits.
  • Prepare payroll-related reports and assist with annual audits.
  • Respond to payroll and benefits inquiries from employees and administration.

Qualifications:
  • School district payroll experience (required).
  • Proficient in Skyward Qmlativ (required).
  • At least three years of experience in a school district business office or similar payroll/finance environment.
  • Knowledge of TRS and IMRF reporting preferred.
  • Knowledge of and ability to process and manage FMLA requests and other payroll-related leave processes accurately
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred.
  • Strong understanding of current accounting principles, payroll processing, and state/federal reporting requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll systems and employment laws.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, including creating formulas, analyzing data, and developing reports.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google platforms, and financial software.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support staff payroll questions and deadlines.
  • Able to perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
