Position Summary
The Medical Billing Payment Processor is responsible for accurately collecting, processing, and reconciling patient payments prior to and at the time of service. This role serves as a front-line financial representative, ensuring a smooth payment experience while adhering to all healthcare financial compliance standards. The processor handles a variety of payment methods including credit cards, debit cards, checks, and electronic payments, while maintaining the highest level of patient confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Service Payment Processing:
โข Collect and process patient payments prior to medical services being rendered, including co-pays, deductibles, and self-pay balances
โข Review patient accounts and insurance eligibility to calculate estimated patient financial responsibility
โข Process credit card, debit card, check, and electronic payment transactions accurately and securely
โข Issue payment receipts and document all transactions in the practice management system
โข Establish and manage patient payment plans in accordance with organizational policies
Billing and Account Management:
โข Verify insurance coverage, benefits, and authorization requirements prior to service dates
โข Post payments to patient accounts in a timely and accurate manner
โข Reconcile daily payment batches and prepare end-of-day financial reports
โข Identify and resolve payment discrepancies, overpayments, and refund requests
โข Follow up on outstanding balances and communicate with patients regarding their financial obligations
Patient Relations and Communication:
โข Communicate patient financial responsibilities clearly, professionally, and with empathy
โข Assist patients in understanding their benefits, billing statements, and payment options
โข Direct patients to financial assistance programs or charity care resources when applicable
โข Respond to patient billing inquiries via phone, email, and in person in a timely manner
Compliance and Security:
โข Maintain strict compliance with HIPAA regulations and organizational privacy policies at all times
โข Follow PCI-DSS standards when handling credit and debit card transactions
โข Adhere to all state and federal healthcare billing regulations and guidelines
โข Maintain secure handling of all financial documents and patient information
Minimum Qualifications
โข High school diploma or GED equivalent required; Associate degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or related field preferred
โข Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in medical billing, healthcare collections, or a related financial role
โข Working knowledge of medical billing processes, insurance terminology, and healthcare revenue cycle
โข Proficiency with practice management software (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or similar systems)
โข Experience processing multiple payment types including credit/debit cards, checks, and electronic payments
โข Familiarity with CPT codes, ICD-10 coding basics, and Explanation of Benefits (EOB) documents
Preferred Qualifications
โข Certified Professional Biller (CPB) or Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) credential
โข Experience with pre-authorization and insurance eligibility verification processes
โข Knowledge of government payer programs including Medicare and Medicaid billing requirements
โข Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish or other languages) is a plus

โข Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for reconciliation tasks
โข Strong problem-solving skills and ability to resolve billing discrepancies efficiently
โข Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
This is an in office position in Playa Vista, CA
Pay:
- $21-26/hr Depending on experience
