The Associate Dean, Graduate Career Advancement & Engagement implements, designs, and executes a strategy to support student professional development goals, and assists students in making connections with potential employers. Furthermore, the Associate Dean works to improve the number of students who are employed in full-time, long-term positions at graduation or soon thereafter. In this role the Associate Dean oversees the planning, development, and administration of all career advancement and experiential learning services for the Miami Herbert Business School (MHBS) students and alumni. Furthermore, the incumbent builds and cultivates relationships with external organizations and professionals to develop employment, internship, co-op and experiential learning opportunities. This position is also responsible for business school career outcomes related rankings (data collection and strategy), as well as outcomes data analysis and reporting for all accreditation reports related to graduate business programs. Additionally, this role develops and co-leads the for-credit Career Connect course.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Create, collaborate and execute a strategic vision for the role of career advancement to include the development and implementation of long-term strategic plans, short term operational plans and the determination of strategic priorities in support of the college's strategic plan.

  • Promote services, programs and resources to internal and external stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, employers and alumni.

  • Expand and provide strategic oversight for experiential learning opportunities at the college.

  • Provide leadership to Career Advancement and experiential learning staff, motivate the team to reach beyond traditional responsibilities, processes and ways of thinking and collaborate to achieve departmental and college goals.

  • Collaborate with Development, Alumni Relations and Executive Education to identify corporate partnerships and development opportunities to support internship and employment initiatives and programs.

  • Continuously cultivate and manage a broad spectrum of internal and external working relationships including with faculty; academic and student life administrators; admissions and enrollment management, advancement, alumni relations, and institutional research colleagues; alumni; government leaders; and employers.

  • Regularly survey graduates and employers to ensure programs meet or exceed current job market and employer needs.

  • Ensure key data related to student and employer traffic on a semester and annual basis is collected, analyzed, maintained, and appropriately reported to various University and external constituents.

  • Ensure trends and patterns in student and employer data are analyzed to support strategic decision-making regarding resource deployment, and service and program delivery.

  • Ensure that levels of student and employer satisfaction with various programs and services are systematically analyzed, and the results are used to optimize overall resource effectiveness. Develop and ensure a culture of continuous improvement exists in the Center, and data-driven strategic planning and decision making is conducted.

  • Continually reviews, recommends, evaluates and implements best practices from peer- and peer-plus institutions as appropriate.

  • Develop and implement a career development plan for all students which includes career exploration, experiential learning, recruiting preparation, and career readiness.

  • Provide individual career coaching to students regarding career planning and job searches, including self-assessment, career research, resume and cover letter review, interview preparation, and professional skills development.

  • Oversee the daily function of the assigned division, including the supervision of staff members.

  • Maintain current knowledge of recruiting trends, industry characteristics, job specifications/requirements, industry vocabulary, and industry/employer culture.

  • Participate in admissions decisions for students in applicable programs.

  • Partner with other college leaders to develop and implement programs supporting student retention.

  • Design and implement research projects on recruitment and student outcomes.

  • Analyze enrollment data to determine process, and department effectiveness.

  • Lead an accountable, agile, and data-driven team to meet shared and explicit goals.

  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of a positive applicant journey that reflects the University and School culture and values.

  • Adopt plans to address international and/or other new markets.

  • Collaborate interdepartmentally on strategy and functions related to rankings and student retention.

  • Procure technology to improve student engagement and enrollment initiatives.

  • Perform outreach functions with groups such as students, faculty, staff, alumni and employer recruiters to effectively engage in career-related activities.

  • Develop and oversee experiential learning opportunities ensuring student learning outcomes and quality of service standards are developed and assessed to ensure identified outcomes are achieved. Partner with employers and faculty to develop full-time, internship, co-op and experiential learning opportunities for students.

  • Meet graduate salary and employment placement goals for Miami Herbert Business School.

  • Ensure data collection and reporting is timely and accurate for Miami Herbert Business School.

  • Participate in the creation of career resources, and handouts.

  • Maximize Career Services online resources for all career-related opportunities.

  • Leverage technology to enhance networking and connections for employers, students, and alumni.

  • Support new student orientation and graduate commencement ceremonies.

  • Develop and implement strategies for career management events, programs and services to internal and external stakeholders, including creating publications, managing social media and updating the website(s).

  • Develop and oversee on campus career seminars, professional development workshops and interviews between employers and students.

  • Ensure accurate and complete alumni information including contact details and career paths for rankings surveys and engagement initiatives.

  • Develop alumni career engagement programming around the country to promote networking and placement.

  • On occasion work evening and weekend hours for ad-hoc career-related events and periodically travel to conferences and workshops.

  • Develop programming and resources for newly admitted students to drive higher yield rates and better student outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Master's degree required. Doctorate degree preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 8 years of directly relevant experience (i.e. corporate/industry, recruiting, career coaching) in a corporate or 4-years in a research university environment.

This must include at least 2 years of experience directly in business career services or in business recruiting from campuses.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Knowledge of business and management principles.

  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.

  • Ability to establish department goals and objectives that support the strategic plan.

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

  • Extensive knowledge of project management, including program design, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Knowledge of graduate and professional school admissions processes and requirements; ability to design programs to address pre-professional school student needs.

  • Expert knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.

  • Expert knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.
