What is a pattern designer?

A Pattern Designer creates templates or designs used for manufacturing textiles, clothing, or other patterned products. They work with software or manual drafting techniques to develop precise patterns that ensure proper fit and aesthetics. Pattern Designers collaborate with fashion designers, product developers, and manufacturers to refine designs. Their role requires technical skills in pattern-making, material knowledge, and attention to detail to achieve the desired look and function.

What are the typical responsibilities of a pattern designer?

Pattern Designers are responsible for creating, modifying, and testing patterns for garments or textiles, either by hand or using CAD software. Their daily tasks often include meeting with designers or product managers to discuss concepts, converting sketches into precise patterns, and collaborating with sample makers to ensure fit and quality. They may also assess pre-production samples and make necessary adjustments to improve manufacturability. Working with various departments, including production, design, and quality assurance, is common to ensure seamless workflow from concept to finished product. This collaborative environment enables Pattern Designers to contribute directly to the success of new fashion lines or textile products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the pattern designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pattern Designer, you need a strong background in textile or fashion design, a keen eye for detail, and knowledge of fabric properties, often supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software like Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, or specialized pattern-making programs is commonly required. Creativity, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration skills are important soft skills in this field. These abilities are crucial for creating accurate, innovative patterns that meet both design and production requirements in a fast-paced industry.

How do you become a pattern designer?

To become a pattern designer, you typically need a background in fashion design, textile design, or a related field, along with skills in drawing, digital design software like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, and knowledge of fabric and printing techniques. Building a portfolio of your work and gaining experience through internships or freelance projects can help establish your career. Many pattern designers also stay updated on industry trends and may pursue certifications to enhance their skills.

Pay Range: $55 – $58/hr

Contract: 5 months with possible extensions or C2H

Job Description :

Role Overview

This is a hands-on individual contributor role focused primarily on design production and delivery. The designer will work within established UX direction, brand standards, project priorities, and design system foundations.

Success in this role will be measured by design quality, speed, accuracy, responsiveness, organization, and the ability to deliver development-ready work while communicating effectively with relevant stakeholders.

This is a hands-on, delivery-focused role for a UX/UI Designer who can translate business requirements, wireframes, existing design patterns, and creative direction into polished, production-ready digital experiences. The designer will support ongoing website and ecommerce initiatives while helping maintain consistency across established design systems.

The ideal candidate is highly proficient in Figma, comfortable working within existing design systems, and able to move efficiently across multiple workstreams. This role will collaborate closely with UX leadership, ecommerce partners, engineering teams, and other designers to deliver high-quality digital experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate business requirements, wireframes, user flows, and creative direction into detailed, responsive digital designs.
  • Apply and extend established design system components, patterns, variables, and styles across new and existing experiences.
  • Create and refine reusable Figma components when existing system patterns do not fully meet design or business requirements.
  • Maintain organized, accurate, and development-ready Figma files.
  • Prepare design specifications, interaction details, responsive behaviors, annotations, and supporting documentation for engineering handoff.
  • Support production updates, design iterations, content changes, and feature enhancements across ecommerce and digital workstreams.
  • Partner with UX leadership and cross-functional teams to review requirements, resolve design questions, and iterate efficiently.
  • Collaborate with front-end engineering teams during implementation to clarify design intent and support visual quality assurance.
  • Review developed experiences and identify visual, interaction, responsive, and accessibility issues.
  • Identify inconsistencies, outdated patterns, and opportunities to improve component reuse and design-system adoption.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide practical recommendations within the scope of assigned projects.
  • Manage multiple assignments, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-moving, iterative environment.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in UX/UI design, product design, ecommerce design, or a related digital design discipline.
  • Strong proficiency in Figma, including Auto Layout, components, variants, variables, prototyping, and shared libraries.
  • Experience creating detailed, responsive web designs for desktop and mobile experiences.
  • Experience working within and contributing to established design systems.
  • Strong visual design skills with attention to typography, spacing, hierarchy, layout, and interaction details.
  • Ability to take direction, work within defined requirements, and independently execute high-quality design work.
  • Experience preparing organized design files and clear handoff documentation for engineering teams.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards and their application to digital product design.
  • Experience collaborating with Product, Engineering, Brand, Marketing, and UX teams.
  • Ability to work efficiently across multiple projects and respond constructively to feedback.
  • Proficiency with PowerPoint or similar presentation tools for stakeholder communication and design reviews.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Portfolio demonstrating polished UI execution, responsive ecommerce or product design, and component-based design work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing for Shopify or another ecommerce platform.
  • Experience supporting ecommerce replatforming, redesign, or optimization initiatives.
  • Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, or similar project management and collaboration tools.
  • Experience conducting design QA against developed digital experiences.
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, React, or component-based front-end frameworks.
  • Experience working in an Agile or iterative product development environment.

This is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We invite resumes from all qualified, interested parties, regardless of race, gender, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, age, or any other protected classification under national or local law.
