Job description

Find your calling at Mercy!Position Details:

Transports patients and equipment to and from various departments within the Medical Center. Performs various patient related activities, as assigned. Patients are transported in a safe manner and proper body mechanics are utilized at all times. Maintains PAR levels for equipment in various locations throughout the Medical Center. Continuously shows the ability to work well with other co-workers (both within the Patient Transportation Department and other departments). Uses Epic software to track each patient's location as they travel to and from designated areas throughout the facility. Uses Epic software to to track equipment movement throughout the facility.

Safety/Risk Management -
Acknowledges and maintains the right to privacy and confidentiality.
Practices Oxygen safety techniques to ensure the safety of our co-workers and patients. Oxygen safety includes properly storing oxygen as well as connecting and disconnecting oxygen before, after, and during each patient transport.
Co-workers are also CPR certified, as they are alone with patients while in transit, and must be prepared to administer CPR, if the need arises.
Participates in hand-off communication between the Nursing division and the ancillary departments through the S-Bar, as well as verbal communication.
Practices Safe Patient handling by understanding and adhering to isolation precautions.
Has knowledge and can manipulate patient care items, such as chest tubes, Foley catheters, O2 canulas.
Properly cleans equipment after each transport.
Handles patients chart while transporting.
Uses proper techniques to identify patient and notifies floor personnel upon arrival or departure. Oxygen tanks are secured at all times and not left on the backs of wheelchairs. The side rails of beds and stretchers are raised when patient is present and the brake is locked. Properly transport patients using Bariatric equipment (Beds, Wheelchairs, etc).
Coordination of Services - Contributes to the continuity and consistency of patient care by making self available to the department by following assigned working schedule and arriving to work on time, logs into Epic and retrieves first move of the day.
Assists Nursing and ancillary Departments with transferring patients from Bed to stretcher (of wheelchair) and back, using proper body mechanics.
Primary Aspects -
Transports patients in an efficient and caring manner. Patient is provided a cover for privacy (Dignity Cape). Transfers chart with patient. Assists nurses, PCA's or Techs with patient transfers.
Transports deceased patients, fetal demises, and limbs to the morgue.
Discharges patients from the Medical Center (including Heart Prints patients - mothers that lost their child during birth).
Transports critical patients throughout the facility (from ER or OR)
Work in specialty areas as part of the patient care team (Heart and Vascular, Radiology, Dialysis, Surgery, Perinatal, and Discharge)
Transports Trauma patients throughout the facility.
Transports patient medications.
Has the ability to independently operate rental and special equipment (Bariatric beds, specialty beds, sand beds).
Assists Nursing and Respiratory with the transporting of vented patients.
Ensures equipment is stocked in appropriate areas and reports if there are shortages.
Presents neat and clean appearance appropriate for a professional healthcare environment in accordance with hospital policy. Takes initiative and stays productive by looking for patient transports, requests next transport, assesses patient readiness and requests another move if current assistance will be delayed more than five minutes. Completes 25 transports per 8 hour shift (equates to 3.13 moves per hour).
Communication Management -
Communications are courteous, utilizing appropriate statements in a pleasant tone of voice.
Communicates with nursing when taking patients from the units as well as upon return to the unit.
Completes written record (sign in/out book), on each unit.
Assumes responsibility for problem solving; does not assign fault to other departments or individuals. Offers additional assistance before concluding an interaction. Focuses attention and communication on the individual being served. Demonstrates congruence between verbal and nonverbal communication. Actively participates in unit activities, committees and teams which promote unit operations.
Technology -
Keeps pager on at all times and responds to pager each time it is paged. Also, keeps Epic status current.
Correctly enters patient information into Epic.

Education: None
Certifications: BLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED) program
Other: The physical demands described here are the representative of the minimums that must be met by an employee to perform all essential functions of the job. Most physical demands are below, plus: Minimal: mid lift of < 100# (rare), carrying < 12 lbs, push
Preferred Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Experience: Two years customer service experience.
