Under the supervision of the EVS, Patient Transport and Linen Services Director, the Transportation Aide provides safe and efficient patient and equipment transport services within the hospital. This role is responsible for moving patients, equipment, and materials between departments while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and dignity. The Transportation Aide supports hospital operations by facilitating timely and organized movement, assisting clinical staff as needed, and maintaining compliance with hospital safety and infection control policies.

Required Qualifications and Skills:
  • Ability to safely transport patients, staff, and equipment throughout the hospital.
  • Confirmed understanding and adherence to hospital policies, safety procedures and infection control practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Reliable and punctual, while consistently maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend basic medical terminology
  • Ability to utilize positive interpersonal skills when interacting with patients and taking into consideration cultural background, linguistic skills and age of customers.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
  • Previous experience in a hospital, healthcare, or patient transport setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred
  • Ability to assist patients with mobility limitations safely and compassionately.
  • Knowledge of hospital layout, departments, and workflow processes
  • Experience using hospital communication systems (transport software, radios, phones, or pagers)
  • Experience interacting with diverse patient populations in a professional manner.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Safely transport patients between departments, including to and from patient rooms, diagnostic testing areas, Emergency Department, hospital-based clinics, and discharge areas.
  • Facilitate transport of equipment, supplies, and medical records as needed to support clinical and operational workflow.
  • Appropriately identify patients prior to actual transport to ensure two positive identifiers in confirming correct patient.
  • Assist patients with mobility limitations, including those in wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds, consistently ensuring safety and comfort.
  • Follow established safety procedures when transporting patients via stretcher, wheelchair, or when transferring with lifting devices.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing staff, physicians, and other hospital personnel to coordinate timely, safe patient transport.
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper functioning of transport equipment, including wheelchairs, stretchers, and carts; return oxygen to proper areas
  • Adhere to hospital infection control protocols and safety procedures at all times.
  • Adhere to patient confidentiality policies and regulations at all times.
  • Promptly report patient safety concerns, equipment malfunctions, or incidents to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist in emergency situations as needed, adhering to hospital emergency response procedures.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and compassionate service to patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, to support hospital operations and patient care.
  • Continuously carry out the Sturdy Health Mission to attain excellence in the provision of healthcare services by consistently fulfilling the commitment to quality and patient centered service.
  • Maintain dignity and rights of patient/family/staff. Listen and respond to inquiries/complaints with respect and sensitivity. Refer complaints to immediate supervisor for investigation and follow-up.
  • Complete 100% of required in-service education. Actively participate in/attend departmental meetings, while engaging in departmental problem solving.
  • Keep informed of changes in policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure work area is clean and safe, following departmental procedures.
  • Demonstrates safe use and proper maintenance of equipment, reporting malfunctions appropriately.
  • Comply with established dress code, wearing picture ID badge 100% of the time.
  • Prioritize workload to meet established timeframes. Inform supervisor when timeframes will not be met.

Physical Demands:
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move continuously throughout the hospital for extended periods.
  • Ability to push, pull, and maneuver wheelchairs, stretchers, and carts safely.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds or assist in moving heavier patients with appropriate equipment or team support.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach as needed to assist patients and access supplies.
  • Manual dexterity to operate equipment, doors, and communication devices.
  • Sufficient vision and hearing to safely navigate hospital corridors, respond to alarms, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to cleaning solutions, disinfectants, and occasional patient bodily fluids, with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations, including moving patients or equipment safely.

Salary Range: $15.67-$23.50
Salary Range Details
The pay range displayed on each job posting reflects the anticipated range for new hires. A successful candidate's actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate's work history, experience, skill set, and education. This is not inclusive of the value Sturdy Health's benefits package (if applicable), which includes among other benefits, healthcare/dental/vision and retirement. For annual salaries this is based on full-time employment.
