As of Jul 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for pathology nursing in the United States is $35.05, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.48 and $41.59 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a pathology nurse typically collaborate with laboratory staff and physicians during the diagnostic process?

Pathology nurses play a crucial role in bridging communication between patients, laboratory staff, and physicians. They are responsible for preparing patients for diagnostic procedures, ensuring specimens are collected correctly, and relaying vital information to the pathology lab. Additionally, they often assist with interpreting lab results for patients and coordinating follow-up care. This collaborative environment requires strong communication skills and attention to detail to ensure accurate diagnoses and optimal patient outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pathology Nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pathology Nurse, you need a strong background in nursing assessment, specimen collection, and knowledge of disease processes, typically supported by a nursing degree and active RN licensure. Familiarity with laboratory information systems, phlebotomy equipment, and electronic health records (EHRs) is often required. Attention to detail, clear communication, and organization are important soft skills for coordinating with laboratory staff and ensuring accurate test results. These skills are crucial for maintaining quality standards, minimizing errors, and supporting effective diagnosis and patient care.

What is the highest paying pathology job?

The highest paying pathology jobs are often in specialized roles such as forensic pathologists, surgical pathologists, or those in leadership positions like pathology department directors. These roles typically require extensive experience, board certification, and advanced skills, and they can offer salaries significantly higher than general pathology positions, often exceeding $300,000 annually.

What does a pathology nurse do?

A pathology nurse assists in the collection, processing, and analysis of tissue and fluid samples for laboratory testing. They work closely with pathologists and laboratory staff, often handling specimen preparation, patient care, and documentation to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Can a nurse be a pathologist?

A nurse cannot become a pathologist because pathology is a medical specialty requiring a medical degree (MD or DO), residency training in pathology, and board certification. Nurses typically work in clinical or patient care roles and do not perform the diagnostic duties of a pathologist, who analyzes laboratory specimens and interprets results. However, nurses may work alongside pathologists in laboratory settings or specialized roles such as pathology nursing, which involves supporting laboratory operations and patient care related to pathology services.

What is pathology nursing?

Pathology nursing is a specialized field of nursing focused on caring for patients who are undergoing diagnostic procedures or receiving treatment for diseases identified through pathology. Pathology nurses often work closely with pathologists and laboratory staff to assist with specimen collection, patient education, and the coordination of care relating to laboratory and diagnostic findings. Their role is critical in ensuring patients understand their diagnoses and treatment plans, as well as providing support during procedures. They may work in hospitals, laboratories, or outpatient clinics.

How to make $150,000 as a nurse?

Pathology nursing typically offers salaries below $150,000, but experienced nurses in specialized roles, such as nurse managers or advanced practice nurses with certifications like CNOR or CRNP, can reach or exceed this income level. Increasing earning potential involves gaining advanced certifications, working in high-demand settings, taking on leadership roles, or pursuing additional education such as a master's degree or nurse practitioner certification.
