Job description

Lab Assistant - Per Diem*

*IMPORTANT NOTE: In lieu of benefits due to "per diem" status, 15% will be added to the hourly rate. Per diem employees are offered work on an "as-needed" basis.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Assistant will draw blood, collect specimens, and run EKG's on patients, process those specimens including accessioning in the LIS. They will also organize, check off and deliver laboratory reports, file reports and requisitions, restock and clean as needed all areas of the laboratory, answer the phone and front window, and perform other duties as needed. By perform those functions in the laboratory; they will help to maintain a smooth workflow for the laboratory technologists. Job responsibilities and performance of procedures are to comply with Section 652.450 of the Nevada Administrative Code, Bureau of Licensure and Certification, Nevada State Division of Health. Employee must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a Laboratory Assistant, State of Nevada.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Education:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.

Licensure:

  • Licensed or eligible for licensure (must obtain within 30 days of hire) as a Lab Assistant with Nevada Division of Public Health.

Certificate Required:

  • American Heart Association BLS required (or obtain within 90 days of hire)

Minimum Work Experience:

  • Previous medical terminology and computer/data entry experience highly preferred.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with attention to detail required.
  • Previous experience working in a hospital or customer service setting highly preferred.


POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Procedures

  • Be totally familiar with all procedures as outline in procedures manual.

Equipment

  • Maintains equipment, specimen processing areas and drawing areas in a clean, neat and orderly manner.

Specimens

  • Process laboratory samples and deliver to clinical laboratory.
  • Properly prepare specimens for shipment to other laboratories as appropriate.
  • Log and process gross tissue samples for shipment to pathologist.
  • Obtain blood, urine and other clinical specimens in a manner, which will insure acceptable and properly identified samples.
  • Strict adherence to two patient identifier policies.

Lab Orders

  • Enters Lab orders into LIS correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Has overall knowledge of LIS including looking up results, faxing & printing results, specimen tracking, call list, and pending list.
