Pathologists' Assistant

Job Summary:
Under direct supervision, the Pathologist Assistant performs gross descriptions of simple or limited specimens, assists during autopsies, and prepares frozen section slides. The role may also involve routine histology tasks.
Job Responsibilities:
 

  • Follow authorized technical procedures for patient testing.
  • Meet established turn-around times for testing and reporting patient results.
  • Receive specimens into the laboratory using appropriate patient identifiers and labeling requirements.
  • Conduct calibration and routine maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Label tissue cassettes using block control sheets.
  • Assist in the preparation of frozen tissue sections, including labeling, cutting, and staining slides.
  • Perform gross descriptions of simple and limited pathology specimens as authorized.
  • Prepare patients for evisceration for post-anatomical diagnosis during autopsy.
  • Work on call for autopsies.
  • Photograph specimens for documentation and conference preparation.
  • Comply with all hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures, including the appropriate use of PPE.
  • Assume responsibility for professional development and complete annual competency assessments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
