Theatre Arts
Position Summary
Gettysburg College is currently seeking a part-time Technical Director/Scene Shop Supervisor to work in the Theater Arts Department. This position will work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to support rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and production deadlines.
The position reports directly to the Faculty Set Designer, with a dotted line to the Executive Director of Campus Safety and the Theater Arts Department Chair. This position will be given a design concept for each production and is expected to determine independently how to safely and realistically execute it. The Technical Director breaks each design into manageable construction tasks and carries them out with the students, working from general guidance and precedent rather than detailed step-by-step direction from the Faculty Set Designer.
Regular duties of the Technical Director/Scene Shop Supervisor include, but are not limited to:
  • Collaborates with the Faculty Set Designer and Director to interpret scenic designs, draft construction plans, and schedule the build and installation of all scenic elements for mainstage theatre productions.
  • Builds and installs scenery, set pieces, and stage properties using woodworking and rigging techniques; serves as the shop's lead carpenter for all department productions.
  • Supervises the daily operation of the scene shop, including maintaining power tools, equipment, and supply inventories, and organizing the space to function safely as both a workshop and backstage area.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises student workers in the safe and proper use of power tools, hand tools, and basic rigging; teaches construction techniques and reinforces shop safety standards.
  • Maintains performance and rehearsal spaces, including the theatre's rigging, soft goods, stage flooring, and storage areas, to ensure spaces remain safe for cast, crew, and audience members.
  • Conducts regular hazard and risk assessments of the shop, performance, and rehearsal spaces; maintains a current chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for paints, solvents, and other shop materials; and promptly reports any safety concerns, incidents, near misses, or hazardous conditions to the Faculty Set Designer, the Chair of the Theatre Arts Department, and the Executive Director of Campus Safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Rate of pay: $22.00
Status: Part-Time, Casual Support Staff (There are no benefits associated with this casual position).
Qualifications
  • CPR/First Aid certification is required within the first 3 months of employment.
  • A valid driver's license is required for transporting materials and equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in Technical Theatre or Entertainment Technology is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of carpentry, safe ladder work, and basic rigging is preferred.
  • Experience with sound systems, microphones, scenic painting, electrics and AV technology is a plus.
