Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
The Skilled Nursing Ward Clerk provides general clerical assistance to the SNF DON & ADON, Resident Assessment Coordinator, staff nurses, physicians, and other staff members to ensure smooth operation on the Skilled Nursing unit. Serves as nursing unit receptionist, secretary, and expedites delivery of messages. Promptly reports needed repairs to related services. Inputs all physician orders and is responsible for printing all monthly orders, medication rands, treatment sheets, ADL sheets monthly. The Ward Clerk also updates all work sheets monthly and as needed. He or she informs family members of quarterly meetings and monthly activities. The Ward Clerk works as a liaison to provide smooth operations with families, staff, and other departments.
Starting Wage: $21/hr DOE
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Skilled Nursing Ward Clerk reports to the Skilled Nursing DON & ADON and Charge Nurse for daily assignments and overall supervision.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
• The work hours can vary to meet the needs of the unit, but will primarily be day shift Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
• Transcribes written physician's orders to appropriate cards, rands, including medication orders, calling attention to any stat orders. Inputs into the computer written physician's orders that will pertain to following months.
• Prepares and sends monthly MDS notification and resident care conference notification for the interdisciplinary team.
• Notifies families of Resident Care Conferences.
• Assists Activity Director and Social Services Designee with monthly calendars and letters as needed.
• Assists SNF Manager with monthly and quarterly letters as needed.
• Orders medical tests, including x-ray, laboratory, physical and respiratory treatments. Assembles charts, preparing for admission, transfer and discharge and making necessary appointments.
• Answers all telephone calls at nurse's station. Relays messages, coordinates and channels messages as necessary.
• Has a working knowledge of the hospital paging system.
• Maintains stationery in charts as needed. (Nurse's notes, physician progress notes, physician order sheets, etc.)
• Maintains charts to ensure that pages are kept in good shape and orderly.
• Add all reports from laboratory, x-ray, etc. to patient record after checking with nurse on duty.
• Prepares patient consent forms.
• Maintains the nursing station in a neat and organized manner.
• Delivers mail and flowers to patients.
• Keeps in confidence all information related to the patient.
• Maintains nursing bulletin board with current information.
• Updates the daily dietary list as needed for volunteers.
• Reviews census to make sure all entries are correct.
• The Monday to Friday Ward Clerk audits the ADLs to make sure that they have all been done.
• Helps nursing staff to prepare Discharge Instructions and organizes the chart in the proper order after discharge.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
FREEDOM TO ACT/ACCOUNTABILITY
The Ward Clerk works within his/her job scope and under the direct supervision of the Skilled Nursing DON & ADON. He/she is accountable to the Skilled Nursing DON.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS/CONTACTS
The Skilled Nursing Ward clerk has contact with nursing staff, physicians, patients, families and the public.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
• Must have a high school diploma.
• Requires basic knowledge of medical terminology.
• Requires computer skills and knowledge.
• Good verbal communication, including telephone and organizational skills.
• Dependability and maturity demonstrated by commitment to patient/ resident needs and by reliability to scheduled time.
• Must be able to work well with staff and to maintain a professional attitude.
