Job description

Northwest Biofuel is hiring a Director of Personnel to build and own our people function end-to-end. You will run all hiring for the organization and be accountable for making sure every employee is placed in a clearly defined role, understands its scope and responsibilities, and stays compliant with that role as our business evolves. This is a hands-on leadership seat with full ownership of recruiting, onboarding, and role governance, reporting directly to ownership.

This is a full-time, on-site position based in the Portland, OR area.

Key Responsibilities:

- Own full-cycle recruiting for all positions: sourcing, screening, interviewing, offers, and closing candidates.

- Define, document, and maintain role descriptions across the organization and keep them current as roles evolve.

- Ensure every employee complies with the scope and requirements of their role, and manage role transitions cleanly.

- Build repeatable, structured hiring processes, interview guides, and scorecards that raise the bar and reduce time-to-hire.

- Lead onboarding so new hires ramp quickly and are set up with the right access and expectations.

- Partner with department leads to forecast headcount and plan for future staffing needs.

- Maintain accurate personnel records and ensure hiring and employment practices comply with applicable law.

- Advise leadership on organizational design, staffing gaps, and workforce planning.

Requirements:

- 5+ years of professional experience in recruiting, employee management, or a combination of both.

- Demonstrated success running full-cycle hiring and building hiring processes from the ground up.

- Strong working knowledge of employment practices and compliance.

- Excellent organizational skills; able to manage many roles and candidates at once without dropping details.

- Strong leadership presence and sound judgment; comfortable holding a high bar and making decisions.

- Self-motivated with an exceptional work ethic; operates with minimal oversight.

- Clear, direct communicator across all levels of the organization.

Preferred:

- Experience defining role/job architectures and keeping them current in a growing company.

- Background in a multi-platform or field-operations environment such as logistics, transportation, or services.

- Familiarity with HRIS/ATS tools and structured, scorecard-based interviewing.

- SHRM-CP, PHR, or equivalent HR credential.

Compensation: $90,000 - $130,000 per year, depending on experience.

Must be self-motivated, highly organized, and a strong leader with an excellent work ethic.
