What does a Particle Accelerator job involve?

A Particle Accelerator job typically involves designing, operating, and maintaining machines that accelerate charged particles for scientific research, medical applications, or industrial use. Professionals in this field work on beam dynamics, control systems, and safety protocols while collaborating with physicists and engineers. These roles exist in research institutions, universities, and specialized facilities like CERN or national laboratories.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Particle Accelerator position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Particle Accelerator Operator, you need a strong background in physics or engineering, typically with a relevant degree or equivalent experience in laboratory settings. Familiarity with control systems, SCADA software, vacuum and cryogenic equipment, and safety certifications such as radiation safety training are commonly required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make someone stand out in this position. These competencies ensure the safe, precise, and efficient operation of complex accelerator equipment, which is critical for supporting research and experimental outcomes.

What does a typical workday look like for someone operating a particle accelerator?

A typical day for a particle accelerator operator involves monitoring equipment, adjusting system parameters, and conducting routine maintenance to ensure stable and safe accelerator operation. Operators frequently collaborate with physicists, engineers, and technicians to troubleshoot issues and support ongoing experiments. The role often includes keeping detailed logs, following strict safety procedures, and occasionally working shifts outside standard business hours. This dynamic environment allows team members to contribute directly to cutting-edge scientific research while developing specialized technical skills.

Job description

Position Summary
Nusano is developing platform technologies that support medical radioisotope production for cancer care, scientific research, and advanced technology applications. Our work depends on highly reliable software infrastructure, real-time data availability, and resilient systems that support a state-of-the-art particle accelerator.
The Site Reliability Engineer will support the deployment and operation of Linux-based, containerized microservice clusters that power our accelerator systems. This hands-on role works in an on-premise production environment where software reliability, infrastructure resilience, automation, observability, and operational stability are critical to continuous operations.
Reporting to the Director of CSEE, this role works closely with engineers and scientists to integrate software and hardware systems responsible for accelerator control, data acquisition, and data management.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
  • Respond to and resolve production issues and outages under the guidance of senior team members
  • Support observability initiatives by implementing and maintaining monitoring dashboards and alerting systems
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code scripts, automation tools, system images, virtual machines, and containers to support accelerator operations
  • Assist in identifying and documenting system vulnerabilities and potential points of failure
  • Document processes, procedures, and troubleshooting steps in the group knowledge base
  • Deploy and configure vendor-supplied software utilities and packages built on the EPICS framework

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in a DevOps/SRE capacity
  • Proficiency in deploying and configuring containers and container orchestration platforms (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience implementing and maintaining real-time observability tools (Grafana, Prometheus, or similar)
  • Experience deploying and configuring CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, Jenkins, Argo, or similar)
  • Understanding of network fundamentals including enterprise routing and switching
  • Strong Linux command-line skills and system administration experience
  • Working knowledge of cybersecurity best practices

Preferred Requirements:
  • Hands-on experience working in a production environment with on-premise hardware
  • Exposure to or familiarity with the EPICS framework
  • Experience maintaining Linux systems (Red Hat, Rocky, CentOS)
  • Programming experience in Python and/or C/C++ with object-oriented principles
  • Experience with databases and object stores (ElasticSearch, MariaDB, S3, MongoDB)
Experience in highly regulated or safety-critical environments

Physical Requirements:
  • Work conducted in both office and production facility environments
  • Ability to sit for extended periods with frequent computer use requiring repetitive keyboard and mouse operation
  • Less than 10% travel

About Nusano:
