What are part-time jobs?

Part-time jobs are positions in which employees work fewer hours per week than full-time employees, typically less than 35-40 hours. These jobs often offer more flexible schedules, making them ideal for students, parents, or anyone needing to balance work with other commitments. Part-time roles can be found in a variety of industries, such as retail, food service, healthcare, and administration. Benefits and pay may vary compared to full-time positions, and some part-time jobs may not offer benefits like health insurance or paid time off.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a part-time worker, you generally need reliability, time management, a willingness to learn, and the relevant educational or experience requirements for the specific role. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, scheduling software, or other job-specific tools is often beneficial. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork are valuable soft skills that help part-time employees integrate quickly into existing teams. These skills and qualities are important because part-time roles often require flexibility and the ability to contribute effectively within limited hours.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time employees, and how can they overcome them?

Part-time employees often face challenges such as limited access to benefits, inconsistent scheduling, and fewer opportunities for advancement compared to full-time staff. To overcome these, it's helpful to communicate availability clearly, proactively seek feedback, and express interest in professional development opportunities. Building strong relationships with colleagues and supervisors can also lead to greater flexibility and consideration for future full-time roles. Staying organized and adaptable is key to balancing work with other commitments.

At Bigham’s Smokehouse, we believe leadership is about more than being in charge. It is about serving people well, setting the standard, encouraging the team, and helping create a family atmosphere for both our guests and our employees.
Our family has been serving West Texas since 1978, and we are looking for a Part-Time Team Leader who wants to be part of something meaningful. This is a great opportunity for someone who is responsible, mature, dependable, and interested in growing as a leader.
A great Part-Time Team Leader at Bigham’s understands that we are in the people business, not just the food business. Food quality matters. Speed matters. Cleanliness matters. But the way we treat our team and serve our guests matters just as much.
This role is fast-paced, hands-on, and team-focused. You will help lead the shift, support Team Members, protect food quality, and make sure guests are served with care and consistency. From building plates to cleaning floors, you understand that every task matters when it is done with excellence.
At Bigham’s, we value Excellence, Consistency, Loyalty, and Service. These values guide how we work, how we lead, how we treat one another, and how we serve our community.
What This Role Looks Like
As a Part-Time Team Leader, you will help set the tone for the shift. You will lead by example, communicate clearly, and help the team stay organized and focused.
You are someone who can hold people accountable while still showing respect, kindness, and patience. You understand that leadership means serving the team, not just telling people what to do.
You enjoy helping others succeed under pressure. You notice what needs to be done, jump in where help is needed, and help Team Members understand why their work matters.
You also understand the value of systems. Checklists, cleaning standards, food quality standards, and accountability tools help the team succeed and keep the restaurant running with consistency.
Responsibilities
As a Part-Time Team Leader, you will be expected to:
  • Lead the team with a service-first, team-first mindset
  • Set the tone for the shift through attitude, work ethic, and communication
  • Help Team Members feel supported, prepared, and empowered
  • Hold the team accountable with respect, kindness, and clarity
  • Make sure food quality, presentation, and consistency meet Bigham’s standards
  • Keep the shift organized and help the team stay focused during busy times
  • Communicate clearly with Team Members, managers, and guests
  • Lead by example in every task, including serving food, cleaning, stocking, and helping where needed
  • Use checklists, cleaning standards, and other systems to help the restaurant run well
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment
  • Help train and encourage Team Members
  • Serve guests with genuine hospitality and care
  • Represent Bigham’s values of Excellence, Consistency, Loyalty, and Service
What We’re Looking For
A strong candidate is someone who is:
  • Mature, dependable, and responsible
  • Team-oriented and willing to serve others
  • Able to lead by example
  • Comfortable giving direction and holding others accountable
  • Kind, respectful, and steady under pressure
  • Teachable and open to feedback
  • Organized and able to manage multiple tasks
  • Able to work in a fast-paced restaurant environment
  • Able to communicate clearly with teammates, managers, and guests
  • Able to stand for several hours at a time
  • Able to lift, carry, or pull heavy objects when needed
  • Willing to complete or maintain a Food Handler’s Certification or Manager Food Safety Certification if required
Leadership experience is helpful, but strong character, ownership, humility, and a desire to grow as a leader matter just as much.
Schedule
This is a part-time leadership position. Hours may vary based on restaurant needs and availability. Evening and weekend availability is a plus.
This role may be a good fit for college students, college-aged candidates, young professionals, or anyone looking for meaningful part-time leadership experience in a values-driven, team-focused environment.
Why Work at Bigham’s?
At Bigham’s, leadership means helping people become better while serving guests with excellence. We want leaders who care about people, care about standards, and care about doing things the right way.
You will grow in responsibility, communication, teamwork, accountability, and servant-hearted leadership. You will be part of a workplace built around family, service, integrity, and strong values.
If you are looking for a part-time leadership role where you can work hard, serve others, grow people, and be part of a team that feels like family, we would love for you to apply.
