Job description

CURRENT HOLLAND HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES- Please apply through Find Jobs from your Workday employee account.
This position has a holiday rotation a 3 week rotation as follows:
Wks 1& 2- Mon, Tues 1p-11:30p / Fri 4:30a-3p
Wk 3- Mon 1p-11:30p Fri 4:30a-3p
The Specimen Processor works under the direction of the Preanalytical Services Manager and/ or the Technical Manager serving as a key resource in the specimen processing area of the laboratory, facilitating the flow of specimens and specimen requirement information between requesting, collecting, transporting, testing and reporting parties. The Specimen Processor maintains skills in the registration, sorting, preparation, and distribution of samples submitted for laboratory analysis. The Specimen Processor works closely with all members of the laboratory team and serves as a resource for both external and internal customers in the selection, registration, collection and handling of samples for laboratory testing.
Job Type: Part time (60 hours every two weeks)
Shift Length: Wk 1/2- Mon/Tues 1p-11:30p, Fri 4:30a-3p Wk 3- Mon 1p-11:30p, Fri 4:30a-3p
Wage Range: $16.99-$23.64
Weekend Requirements: Weekend rotation required
Education Requirements:
-High school diploma/GED, or higher education
- Valid State of Michigan drivers license
- BLS/CPR through the American Heart Association
PROCESSES AND PROCEDURES
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of overall laboratory processes and procedures with special attention to specimen requirement information for registering, requesting, collecting, transporting, testing and reporting.
  • Maintains documentation of sample or patient data integrity problems during the ordering process as directed.
  • Able to prioritize workload based on specimen requirements and/or specimen acuity.

WORKFLOW
  • Follows and helps identify best practices for the organization of workload to achieve optimum turnaround times.
  • Demonstrates careful attention to detail and the ability to multitask.
  • Documents sample integrity and similar problems that may contribute to lengthened turnaround times.
  • Review and resolve pending report for all specimens and ensures follow-up of tests with turnaround times greater than expected as applicable.
  • Able to alternate workflow based on department need.

CLERICAL
  • Performs needed data entry, documentation, filing and other clerical tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assists in the development and training of staff of new or changed documentation processes.
  • Reviews specimen processing problem logs and follows up with any necessary corrective actions.
  • Documents review and any actions taken.
  • Identifies process improvement opportunities and helps develop solutions.
  • Maintains competence with laboratory and organization wide information systems as applicable to the specimen processing role.

USE OF RESOURCES
  • Works closely and collaboratively with all members of the laboratory team in the delivery of quality clinical laboratory services and timely sample collection and testing.
  • Serves as a resource for both internal and external customers of the laboratory for the flow of specimens and specimen requirement information between requesting, collecting, transporting, testing and reporting parties.
  • Practices and promotes safe work practices throughout the laboratory with special attention to specimen processing.

INSTRUMENT MAINTENANCE
  • Understands the basic operation and maintenance of processing instruments.
  • Can trouble-shoot basic problems or refer them to the appropriate person.
