Balancing part-time volunteering with other responsibilities often requires clear communication and strong time management skills. Many organizations offer flexible scheduling options, allowing volunteers to choose shifts or projects that fit their availability. Regularly evaluating your workload and discussing any changes with your team can help maintain a positive experience while contributing meaningfully.

To thrive as a Part Time Volunteer, you typically need a willingness to help, reliability, and a basic understanding of the organization's mission, with qualifications varying by volunteer role. Familiarity with communication tools (like email or scheduling apps) and any required training or background checks are common. Part Time Volunteering involves unpaid work often with no formal credentials, typically in community or non-profit settings. While volunteering offers flexible, unpaid support, social work roles require formal education and licensure. Both serve community needs but differ significantly in credentials, environment, and employment status.

What is part time volunteering?

Part time volunteering refers to offering your time and skills to support an organization, cause, or community on a flexible, non-full-time basis. Part time volunteers typically commit a few hours per week or month, making it easier to fit volunteering into a busy schedule. These roles can range from administrative tasks and event support to hands-on work with people, animals, or the environment. Part time volunteering is a great way to gain experience, build connections, and make a positive impact without a full-time commitment.

Job description

About Mass Audubon
Mass Audubon is the largest nature-based conservation organization in New England. Founded in 1896 by two women who fought for the protection of birds, Mass Audubon carries on their legacy by focusing on the greatest challenges facing the environment today: the loss of biodiversity, inequitable access to nature, and climate change. With the help of our 160,000 members and supporters, we protect wildlife, conserve and restore resilient land, advocate for impactful environmental policies, offer nationally recognized education programs for adults and children, and provide endless opportunities to experience the outdoors at our wildlife sanctuaries. Explore, find inspiration, and take action at massaudubon.org.

About This Position
The Northeast region of Massachusetts includes some of the most spectacular and well-visited wildlife sanctuaries in the Mass Audubon network. The sanctuaries of the Northeast Region sit in the Greater Boston, Merrimack Valley and North Shore areas of the Commonwealth. They include Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary in Natick, which sits along the Charles River and includes miles of trails, a nature center, and a special reputation for giving the community a unique nature-based experience. Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Wildlife Sanctuary is located along the Merrimack River and has long been the visitor portal to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s Parker River Wildlife Refuge and home to some of the most spectacular and diverse birding on the Atlantic Coast. Five of our sanctuaries within this region (Habitat, Broadmoor, Joppa Flats, Blue Hills Trailside, and Museum of American Bird Art Nature Center) are properties with nature centers that offer trails, summer camps, preschool, and daily programming for visitors. In total, the sanctuaries within the Northeast Region see roughly 150,000 visitors annually.

Mass Audubon is seeking a part-time Volunteer Coordinator to assist with the administrative, logistical, and operational management of the Northeast Region’s volunteer cohort. The Volunteer Coordinator works closely with the region’s Operations Manager on a daily basis to manage volunteer onboarding, opportunity posting, hour entry, analysis, and reporting. This position also involves directly working with volunteers and members of the public, the Statewide Volunteer Coordinator, members of the region’s Property and Education teams, and other internal Mass Audubon departments. This is a heavily administrative-focused position with a focus on volunteer analysis, goal-setting, and best practices; onsite work with volunteer groups and individuals is also required.

Application Instructions
Please submit a resume and cover letter with your ADP application.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, screen, interview, and match volunteers with appropriate projects across the region
  • Collaborate with regional staff to support their volunteer needs in all departments, including the development of volunteer job descriptions and project needs for individuals and groups
  • Onboard new volunteers: field inquiries, onboard into the Volunteer Portal, disseminate training materials, provide volunteer name tags and other gear, and ensure that any additional paperwork (CORI, SORI, and driver background checks) is completed and kept up-to-date
  • Coordinate with businesses, community groups, and others interested in volunteering, including managing outreach, communication, and potential donations
  • Maintain data on volunteers, including schedules, hours, years of service, and general information, utilizing Mass Audubon’s Volunteer Portal
  • Support volunteer recognition efforts and appreciation events
  • Coordinate communication and community building for the region’s volunteers
  • Evaluate volunteer progress and satisfaction with their experiences
  • Participate in courses, workshops, and other events for professional development within and outside Mass Audubon
  • Enter hours for volunteers from Excel trackers and physical log books
  • Occasionally supervise onsite volunteers and volunteer groups
  • Work with Mass Audubon’s Statewide Volunteer Program Manager: participate in monthly volunteer coordinator meetings, submit annual reports when required, request and communicate volunteer group needs, and coordinate participation in Mass Audubon’s Statewide Volunteer Day
  • Work with the region’s Operations Manager, Regional Director, and Statewide Volunteer Program Manager to set annual goals around volunteerism across the region

Qualifications
At Mass Audubon, our highest priority is finding the best candidate for the job. Research has shown that people of color and women are less likely to apply for jobs if they don’t believe they meet every one of the qualifications described in a job description. We encourage you to apply, even if you don't believe you meet every one of our described qualifications or you have a less traditional background. We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications:

Must Haves

  • Associate’s degree or 2+ years of relevant work experience in administrative or database/data entry roles
  • Prior experience working with volunteers or customer service experience in public-facing roles
  • Excellent organizational ability, particularly while multitasking
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • High level of aptitude with computers and software, particularly Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people while exhibiting cultural competency and inclusion

Nice to Haves

  • Project management, operations, or data analysis experience
  • Systems-based mindset
  • Advanced skills in Excel (Pivot tables and functions)

Compensation, Benefits and Perks
This position’s pay range is $24.50-$26.00/hour; actual rate of pay will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This is a year-round position and earns vacation time as well as receives paid holidays.

Work Schedule
This is a part-time, year-round position. Approximately 19 hours per week on Wednesdays and Thursdays; hours on other days will be scheduled based on operational need. Some evenings and weekends for volunteer events will be required with advance notice. Some regional travel will be required, up to 1 day per week, which will include mileage reimbursement and/or vehicle usage based on candidate’s geographic location.

Other Requirements
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.

Mass Audubon’s Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Justice
Mass Audubon embraces diversity and equal opportunity in a serious way. We are dedicated to forming a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be. People of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Mass Audubon’s mission is to “protect the nature of Massachusetts for people and for wildlife” by building a strong coalition of employees, volunteers, and community members. We recognize that the environmental movement and field of conservation have been affected by societal systems that have limited opportunity and access for many people. As a result, Mass Audubon is committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and applicants. We are engaged in an ongoing process of organizational assessment and change, designed to remove barriers and create a workplace where all forms of diversity are recognized and valued.

Equal Employment Opportunity Statement
Mass Audubon is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and applicants. Mass Audubon prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including recruiting, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, compensation and training.
