What are part-time UX researchers?

Part-time UX researchers are professionals who study and analyze how users interact with products or services, typically digital interfaces, to improve usability and overall user experience. Unlike full-time UX researchers, part-time researchers work fewer hours per week, often on specific projects or flexible schedules. Their responsibilities may include conducting user interviews, usability testing, surveys, and analyzing data to provide actionable insights. Part-time roles are ideal for students, freelancers, or those seeking work-life balance while contributing valuable research expertise. They collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and developers to ensure products meet user needs.

How do part-time UX Researchers typically integrate with full-time teams and manage project responsibilities?

Part-time UX Researchers often work closely with full-time team members by focusing on specific phases of the research process, such as conducting user interviews, usability testing, or analyzing feedback. They usually participate in regular team meetings, provide updates on research findings, and collaborate with designers and product managers to ensure insights are actionable. Effective communication and clear scheduling are important to balance deliverables and maintain alignment with project timelines. Many organizations use collaborative tools and shared documentation to streamline this integration, making it easier for part-time researchers to contribute meaningfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time UX Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time UX Researcher, you need a solid understanding of user-centered design principles, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and typically a background in psychology, human-computer interaction, or a related field. Familiarity with research tools such as UserTesting, Optimal Workshop, and data analysis platforms like Excel or SPSS is commonly required. Strong communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills help you convey insights and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure that user needs are accurately identified and integrated into product design, leading to improved user experiences.

Job description

About TEGNA
TEGNA Inc. (NYSE: TGNA) helps people thrive in their local communities by providing the trusted local news and services that matter most. With 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, TEGNA reaches more than 100 million people monthly across the web, mobile apps, streaming, and linear television. Together, we are building a sustainable future for local news.
We're seeking a strategic and creative UX Copy Lead to define and drive our product voice across all digital experiences. In this role, you'll lead UX writing efforts and craft copy that enhances usability, drives clarity, and deepens user engagement. You will shape how we communicate with users in ways that are clear, helpful, and human. You'll collaborate closely with designers, researchers, product managers, and engineers to deliver intuitive, human-centered experiences.
Who you are
The UX Copy Lead will bring our brand voice to life across TEGNA's entire digital ecosystem. You're a strategic thinker who sees content as a key part of the design process-not just words that fill in blanks. You can shift between cross-channel systems thinking and interactive content design with ease. You write like a real human talks, and believe in being clear over clever-but you're capable of both. You're comfortable pushing back or questioning assumptions when it means advocating for the user. You enjoy collaborating with cross-functional teams, and know how to build strong relationships with designers, PMs, and developers. You care deeply about inclusion, accessibility, and plain language. You're always looking to learn, improve, and experiment-whether it's with tone, UX patterns, or tools. And moreover, you are committed to and inspired by our mission to serve and connect local communities everywhere.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead UX Writing & UX Content Design: Write and review in-product copy across user flows, navigation, onboarding, error messages, settings, notifications, and more.
  • Establish Product Voice & Tone: Define, document, and evangelize content standards, voice guidelines, and tone principles that reflect our brand and support usability.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with Product Designers, Researchers, Product Managers, Engineers, Legal, and Marketing to deliver consistent and effective messaging throughout the user journey.
  • Support and Mentor: Provide guidance to other writers and product teams. Mentor junior UX writers or content designers and contribute to building a strong content culture.
  • Improve Through Testing & Research: Use qualitative and quantitative data to test copy, validate ideas, and refine content based on user feedback.
  • Contribute to Design Systems: Partner with design system teams to ensure copy patterns are scalable, reusable, and consistent.

Requirements:
  • 5-7 years of experience in UX writing, content design, or related fields.
  • A portfolio that shows how your copy improves user experience.
  • Proven ability to lead content initiatives in fast-paced, agile environments.
  • Strong knowledge of UX design principles, usability, and accessibility.
  • Experience working in design tools like Figma, and familiarity with systems like Jira or Confluence.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in agile, fast-paced product environments.
  • Familiarity with product management tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence).
  • Background in consumer-driven domains.

Why Join Us?
  • Be the voice behind experiences used by millions of users.
  • Help define the role of UX copy across our organization.
  • Work with a passionate, user-first team of designers and product thinkers.
  • Enjoy competitive compensation, benefits, and opportunities to grow in a supportive environment. #LI-MS1
