What is a part time unit clerk?

Part time unit clerks are administrative professionals who work in healthcare settings, such as hospitals or clinics, and are responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of a medical unit. Their duties typically include answering phones, managing patient records, scheduling appointments, and assisting medical staff with clerical tasks. Working part time means they usually work fewer hours per week compared to full-time staff, which offers flexibility for students or those balancing other commitments. Unit clerks play a vital role in ensuring efficient communication and organization within healthcare teams.

What are the typical responsibilities of a part time unit clerk during a shift?

As a Part Time Unit Clerk, you can expect to handle a variety of administrative and clerical tasks that support the medical team. Your daily responsibilities may include answering phones, managing patient charts, processing admissions and discharges, and communicating between nurses, doctors, and patients' families. You'll also help maintain accurate records and ensure that important information flows smoothly throughout the unit. Working part-time means you may cover specific shifts or provide additional support during busy periods, so flexibility and strong organizational skills are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time unit clerk, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Unit Clerk, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with some roles preferring experience or coursework in medical terminology. Familiarity with hospital information systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and basic office software like Microsoft Office is typically expected. Excellent communication, multitasking, and customer service skills help you interact efficiently with patients, families, and healthcare staff.
