Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program (ICSP) at the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) provides access to simulation-based education for learners across the Health Sciences Campus and ECU Health Medical Center. The program collaborates closely with ECU Health Medical Center in offering educational activities to Graduate Medical Education, East Care, and other hospital staff. The mission of the Clinical Simulation Program is to promote excellence in clinical care, promote patient and learner safety, and improve multidisciplinary team performance using simulation modalities. The ICSP is a fully accredited program by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
A 24-room 10,000 sq. ft. Clinical Simulation Center is located adjacent to the hospital on the first floor of the Brody Health Sciences Building. A new 30,000 sq ft Simulation Center is under construction as part of the new Medical Education Building (opening Fall 2027). The ICSP also has a mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit, a 44-foot specialized vehicle that provides simulation education throughout the region, and an MV-22 Osprey Military Transport Simulator.
Primary Purpose of Position
This is an "Internal Posting" open only to applicants who are currently permanent BSOM faculty of East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine. The position will be a part-time (up to .20 FTE/up to 20%) reassignment of time for a Brody School of Medicine faculty member.
Primary Purpose of Position:
The Director of Ultrasound Education is a visionary leadership role responsible for the strategic design, implementation, and oversight of ultrasound (US) training across the entire undergraduate medical education (UME) continuum. This individual will lead the integration of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) into the longitudinal four-year curriculum and spearhead the development of a specialized Diploma in Medical Ultrasound for the medical students.
This position reports to the Associate Dean of Clinical Simulation and requires consistent on-site engagement in teaching, educational facilitation, and program administration to support the effective implementation of the Ultrasound Simulation Program.
Job Duties:
Teaching / Education (60%)
The Director of Ultrasound Education is responsible for the delivery, facilitation, and oversight of ultrasound-based educational activities for medical students. This includes direct teaching, learner assessment, and active supervision during hands on scanning sessions.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement a four-year longitudinal POCUS curriculum that aligns with foundational sciences in the pre-clerkship years and clinical applications during clerkships.
- Lead hands-on scanning sessions, deliver didactic lectures, and develop asynchronous e-learning modules.
- Certificate Program Development
- Serve as the primary architect for a new certificate in Medical Ultrasound, defining the scope, credit requirements, and clinical practicum standards for Brody School of Medicine.
- Ensure the certificate program meets institutional and national accreditation standards for undergraduate medical education.
Faculty & Resource Management (15%):
The Director of Ultrasound Education participates in faculty and resource management to advance knowledge and facilitate Ultrasound education.
Responsibilities include:
- Facilitate faculty recruitment and maintain faculty education for hands-on training sessions
- Manage the medical school's ultrasound fleet, ensuring hardware and software are maintained and upgraded as technology evolves.
Leadership (10%)
The Director of Ultrasound Education contributes to the strategic and operational leadership of the BSOM Simulation Program.
Responsibilities include:
- Serve as a role model for professionalism, ethical conduct, and academic integrity.
- Promote best practices in ultrasound education and support institutional goals related to learner outcomes.
Research / Scholarly Activity (15%)
The Director of Ultrasound Education participates in scholarly activities to advance knowledge and practice in Ultrasound education.
Responsibilities include:
- Promote and conduct scholarly research in ultrasound education, seeking opportunities for grant funding and peer-reviewed publications.
- Develop and contribute to scholarly outputs, including abstracts, posters, presentations, and manuscripts.
- Stay at the forefront of AI-integrated ultrasound and handheld technology to keep the curriculum modern and scalable.
Note: Other Duties as assigned.

Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- A permanent Brody School of Medicine faculty member.
- MD or DO degree from an appropriately accredited institution or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification is required.
- Two years of experience in medical education leadership, specifically involving ultrasound curriculum design and/or simulation.
- Completion of an Ultrasound Fellowship or post graduate US course or equivalent advanced Ultrasound training in Residency.
- Detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal, interprofessional, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently, problem-solve, analyze complex information, improve processes, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
- Full, unencumbered license to practice medicine in North Carolina.
- Board certified in a clinical specialty.
- Full schedule DEA Registration Certificate.
- Credentialing with ECU Physicians.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Clinical background in any discipline, with preference given to multi-boarded physicians.
- Three or more years of experience in medical education leadership, specifically involving ultrasound curriculum design and simulation.
- Clinician-educator with a mastery of clinical ultrasound, a deep understanding of simulation-based medical education, and the administrative acumen to navigate departmental and institutional structures.
