Journey Diesel Mechanic - Region Three
Are you an experienced mechanic who takes pride in high-quality work? The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a self-motivated professional to join our Region Three (Orem) Equipment Shop.
About the Role
As a Journey Diesel Mechanic, you will ensure our fleet-including snowplows, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy and light duty equipment -operates safely and efficiently. You will primarily work in our shop, but you will also travel across the region to service heavy duty trucks and equipment in the field when it cannot be brought in for repairs.
Position Information

  • FT/PT Status: Full time
  • Background Check: You must successfully pass a criminal history check.
  • Drug Test: Yes, pre-employment and random after hire.
  • Current CDL Holders: Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all commercial driver license and learner permit holders.
  • Schedule Code: B - Competitive Career Service (12 month probationary period)
  • Location: 658 N 1500 W, Orem, UT 84057

Wage Information
Starting at $30.00 per hour, with higher offers based on your specific experience.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for the full lifecycle of equipment maintenance. Key duties include:
  • Maintenance & Inspection: Perform oil changes, lubrication, and safety inspections.
  • Diagnosis & Repair: Use diagnostic tools to identify and fix mechanical issues, including overhauls and adjustments.
  • Electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Fabrication: Perform welding, brazing, and cutting as needed for repairs.
  • Testing: Road-test vehicles before and after service to ensure they meet safety standards.
  • Operations: Order parts, manage inventory paperwork, and interpret repair manuals.
  • Field Work: Transport equipment and perform emergency repairs at various job sites.
  • Snow Plan: Participate in the Regional Snow Removal Plan, safely operating heavy equipment to plow snow and manage ice on the state highway system as needed.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the following requirements:
  • Experience: At least four (4) years of professional mechanic experience. Relevant education may be substituted for experience year-for-year.
  • Licensing: A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Certification: A State Inspection certificate or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
  • Tools: You must provide your own full set of mechanic tools (a tool allowance is provided).
  • Availability: Must be available 24/7 for overtime and varied schedules, especially during weather events.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
You must be willing to work under the following conditions:
  • Physical Demands: This is a strenuous role. You must be able to lift over 50 pounds and work in restricted spaces (crawling, crouching, or climbing).
  • Safety: You will work around heavy machinery and chemicals, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.
