Minimum Qualifications:
MLS I
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences OR an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's).
ASCP or another accrediting agency certified or eligible (Certification must be obtained within one year of employment).
MLS II
Bachelor's degree in a chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science
2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory
CHT (ABHI) certification within 1 year of eligibility. If eligible at time of hire then within 1 year of hire date.
Must be able to identify and report abnormal test results as well as communicate and interact with reviewing Pathologists and submitting clinicians. Must be able to work independently, multi-task, and make subjective decisions. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
MLS III
Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology (BSMT) / Medical Laboratory Scientist (BSMLS) or Bachelor of Science or higher degree, including sufficient biology and chemistry course credits in an ASCP approved discipline
3 years of clinical laboratory experience.
ASCP or equivalent certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist or have been grandfathered in before ASCP requirement. All staff, including BS/BA employees, must have Cytogenetics (ASCP), certification within 24 months of hire.
MLS III Preferred Qualifications:
BSMT or BSMLS degree or degree in Cytogenetics
5 years of Cytogenetics experience
Previous MLS(ASCP) certification and/or related specialty such as MB(ASCP), in addition to required CG(ASCP)
Evidence of excellent knowledge of clinical laboratory quality control practices such as having previous experience as a CAP inspector.

Responsibilities:
MLS I
Conducts inventory counts on assigned areas, restocks supplies as needed, reports supplies to be ordered, and stores received supplies per storage requirements and regulations.
Interacts with staff from various departments to coordinate the proper acquisition, testing, and reporting of patient test results.
Performs function checks on analyzers, lab equipment and automation equipment.
Completes machine maintenance, calibrations, and troubleshoots problems as required. Works with service representatives as needed to facilitate instrument repairs.
Perform other duties as needed.
MLS II
Assists Medical Director and supervisor with analyzing and implementing new tests. Performs additional studies as required for quality assurance initiatives, research support or verification/validation of new equipment or methods.
Completes validation and verification of new instrumentation and testing. Ensures the accuracy of instrument calibration and that preventative maintenance is performed.
Leads training for new employees, students, and residents and performs employee competencies as assigned.
Serves as a resource to assist other technologists in the Microbiology Laboratory.
Maintains all aspects of quality control and quality assurance, assesses for acceptability, and takes corrective action as required.
Performs testing of patient samples, interprets, reviews, and prepares patient test results for review by the Supervisor and/or Medical Director. Interacts with staff from various departments to coordinate the proper acquisition, testing, and reporting of patient test results.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MLS III
Oversees daily operations in area of responsibility, ensuring adequate staff of demonstrated competency is available to meet the workload. Adjusts staff and testing priorities as required.
Supervises and provides general oversight to staff. Contributes to the development of job descriptions, screens and interviews potential hires, trains staff, and engages in ongoing disciplinary actions as needed.
Implements projects, establishes schedules, and assigns staff as needed to meet project requirements as it relates to quality initiatives, research, or validation studies.
Adheres to department budget goals by overseeing the purchasing of supplies, ensuring adequate inventory is on hand to meet operational needs.
Oversees compliance with regulatory requirements of accrediting agencies such as the College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). Participates in CAP inspections both as a direct contact for inspections and as an inspector for other facilities.
Completes required testing on the bench including maintenance, quality control, and function checks as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
