What does a part-time translator do?

As a part-time translator, you translate live speech, audio recordings, or written documents from one language to another. You work less than 40 hours per week in this position. You may work with a specific person as they travel through a foreign country or facilitate communication for multiple parties at an event. You may perform translation duties for groups or individuals, interpret legal documents, or assist new immigrants with tasks like opening a bank account. Your responsibilities include using your language skills to communicate context, intonation, meaning, and emotion as clearly and accurately as possible to the intended individual or group.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time translator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Translator, you need advanced proficiency in at least two languages, a strong grasp of grammar and cultural nuances, and often a relevant degree or certification in translation. Familiarity with computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, terminology management systems, and standard office software is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and effective communication are crucial soft skills that distinguish top performers. These skills ensure accurate, timely, and culturally appropriate translations that meet client or employer expectations.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time translators, and how can they be managed?

Part-time translators often encounter challenges such as managing fluctuating workloads and meeting tight deadlines while balancing other commitments. It can also be difficult to maintain consistent communication with clients or agencies due to varying schedules. To manage these challenges, setting clear boundaries with clients, using project management tools, and prioritizing time effectively are key. Regularly updating language skills and staying organized helps ensure high-quality work despite the part-time nature of the role.

Open Source Collector, Mid
The Opportunity:
With all the information available today, it takes a skilled intelligence collector to know how to find and present the best data to give their clients the right answers. With the critical decisions made in the military every day, we need an open source collector like you to do just that. As an open source collector, you use your specialized language, regional, and functional experience and your attention to detail to develop collection reports to give your client the actionable intelligence and context they need. If you have strong analytical skills and a problem-solving mindset, we have an opportunity to use those skills to support our warfighters, protect our national security, and inform our nation's leaders.
As an open source collector on our team, you'll help your client understand their specific targets, or topics of interest. Using your comprehensive understanding of various collection platforms, you'll explore new data sources and develop effective collection methodologies to combine information from disparate sources. You'll validate information and develop tradecraft as you answer requests from targeters, warfighters, and senior policymakers for internal client publications and US IC-wide products. As the authority on your region, your client will look to you for time-critical responses, often under pressure.
This is a chance to grow your expertise and broaden your skillset into areas like open source tradecraft, report writing, translation, tool benchmarking, policy recommendations, automation and scripting. You'll share your expertise with other collectors through leadership and mentoring. We focus on growing as a team to deliver the best support to our customers, so you'll have resources to learn new skills and tools.
Work with us as we provide the right information at the right time to support the critical needs of our warfighters, policymakers, and nation's leaders.
Join us. The world can't wait.

  • Experience in coding or building webscraping or media veracity tools
  • Ability to demonstrate a score of ILR 2/2 in reading, writing, and listening on the Defense Language Proficiency Test in Mandarin Chinese
  • TS/SCI clearance
  • Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience with open source, or 5+ years of experience with open source in lieu of a degree

Nice If You Have:

  • Knowledge of geospatial technologies such as ArcGIS or GoogleEarth
  • Knowledge of DoD or IC databases and services
  • Knowledge of social media platforms in your region of expertise
