Job description

Job Opportunity at UC Berkeley

At the University of California, Berkeley, we are dedicated to fostering a community where everyone feels welcome and can thrive. Our culture of openness, freedom, and belonging make it a special place for students, faculty, and staff. As a world-leading institution, Berkeley is known for its academic and research excellence, public mission, diverse student body, and commitment to equity and social justice. Since our founding in 1868, we have driven innovation, creating global intellectual, economic, and social value. We are looking for applicants who reflect California's diversity and want to be part of an inclusive, equity-focused community that views education as a matter of social justice. At UC Berkeley, we believe that learning is a fundamental part of working, and we provide space for supportive colleague communities via numerous employee resource groups (staff organizations). Our goal is for everyone on the Berkeley campus to feel supported and equipped to realize their full potential. We actively support this by providing all of our full-time staff employees with at least 80 hours (10 days) of paid time per year to engage in professional development activities.

The Essig Museum is a world-class research collection of insects and spiders with over five million specimens largely from western North America, with additional representation from Pacific Islands, Chile, Central America, and other regions. Although the collection was inaugurated in 1939, some specimens date back to the 1880s. The collection continues to grow through the research enterprises of faculty, staff, and students, including biodiversity surveys, ecology and behavioral studies, and taxonomy and systematic research.

  • 30% Prepare and preserve insect specimens by pinning or point-mounting unmounted materials according to museum standards. This may involve rehydrating fragile or dried specimens prior to handling to ensure proper positioning and minimize damage.
  • 15% Assign and attach unique Essig Museum catalog numbers to individual specimens to support accurate identification, tracking, and long-term collection management.
  • 10% Assist with the organization, labeling, storage, and general maintenance of the BioControl collection in accordance with Essig Museum curation standards to support preservation, accessibility, and research use.
