Job description

Associated Students of San Diego State University Department: MBAC Position Title: SUP Yoga Instructor GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the supervision of the MBAC Instructional Coordinator and MBAC Paddling Program Assistant, SUP Yoga Instructors will teach students of all ages with varying levels of experience how to practice yoga on a stand up paddleboard. Instruction occurs both on land and on the water. Instructors are expected to: create a positive learning environment, inspect equipment before and after class, educate students on the basics of paddling and fundamentals of safe yoga practice, supervise and ensure the safety of students, keep records of attendance, and direct the students in cleanup.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESPrimary FunctionsProvide an outstanding, safe, and educational experience to students on land and in the waterExplain and demonstrate proper SUP Yoga techniques and equipment care Prepare customers for a safe experience by providing thorough introductions to equipment and safety requirementsPerform equipment inspections and complete preventative maintenance projectsMonitor changing weather and water traffic conditions and make appropriate decisions to ensure safety of students, MBAC staff and other water usersAccurately document and organize class related paperwork Prepare and clean up classroom, materials & equipment Maintain strong communication with MBAC Office Assistants and other Instructional StaffOther duties as assignedCustomer Service and CollaborationProvide excellent customer serviceWork collaboratively with other departments to support daily operations and clean upEstablishes and maintains working relationships with various A.S. and University departmentsSafety Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policiesAdheres to Associated Students' Code of Safe PracticesReports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence Ensures completion proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/or non-employee) and forwards to supervisorReports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediatelyQUALIFICATIONSMinimum & Preferred RequirementsMust be at least 18 years old at the time of hireEducationHigh School DiplomaExperience:Demonstrated experience teaching paddling and group yoga requiredPrior teaching experience requiredLicense & Certifications: RYT 200 Certification from an accredited yoga program required Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding (may be obtained after hire date through MBAC)American Canoe Association SUP Level 1 Instructor Certification (may be obtained after hire date through MBAC)FBI, DOJ, and LiveScan fingerprint clearanceCurrent valid Driver's License Trainings:Anti-Harassment Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)Gender Awareness Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)MBAC All Staff TrainingMBAC Safe Powerboat HandlingPERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONSPrioritize safety of MBAC participants and staff as well as other water usersContinually work toward improving technical skills and teaching abilitiesBe proactive about maintaining functioning equipment and clean areasCapable of maintaining positive working relationships with other staff and customersAble to interact effectively with a wide diversity of people and support San Diego State University Associated Students' values and mission KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESMust possess excellent customer service skillsMust have paddling skills or excellent understanding of skillsMust be able to follow oral and written directions and follow projects through to completionSCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONSThis is a part-time position. Flexibility and willingness to work long hours including weekends with high demand during summer. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Physical requirements include but are not limited to: swimming, swimming in rough and deep water, walking, running, walking or running over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying loads. Must be able to swim at least 550 yards, dive at least 10 feet deep, swim with a 10 pound object for at least 20 yards, and tread water for at least 2 minutes. Must be able to watch and supervise groups of students on the water while coaching technique and supervising safety. Must be able to recognize and respond to emergencies and prevent injuries or drowning.RELATIONSHIPSInside the Organization:Reports to the MBAC Instructional CoordinatorReports to the MBAC Paddling Program AssistantWorks with other MBAC Staff as neededEMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Part-Time, Non-Exempt A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with Associated Students. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current Associated Students employees who apply for the position. Fingerprinting is required for all employee and volunteer positions that have direct contact with minor children.
