Job description

The University of New Mexico Southwest Center for Advancing Clinical & Translational Innovation (SW CACTI), located within the Health Sciences Center, is seeking a part-time Programmer Analyst 1 to support the preparation and delivery of clinical data for research. Working under the direct supervision of senior technical staff, the Programmer Analyst 1 will assist with gathering data-request requirements; developing and maintaining routine to moderately complex queries and scripts; extracting, cleaning, linking, validating, and documenting datasets; and applying established safeguards for data security and patient privacy. The position will collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and Informatics team members to support clear, actionable, and compliant research data requests.

SW CACTI is part of the national Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) consortium, funded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, National Institutes of Health. Translational science supports the movement of discoveries from laboratory and clinical research into health systems and communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with data mining and extraction from clinical databases and electronic health records (EHRs) using SQL, business intelligence tools, and other approved technologies.
  • Prepare research datasets by cleaning, transforming, linking, combining, and merging data from multiple sources in accordance with established specifications and procedures.
  • Apply established de-identification methods, which may include removal of direct identifiers, date shifting, randomization, and other approved privacy-preserving techniques.
  • Perform routine quality assurance to evaluate data completeness, validity, reproducibility, and consistency; document findings and escalate complex issues for senior technical review.
  • Meet with faculty, staff, and students to gather information about study questions and data needs; assist with translating requests into clear specifications, deliverables, and documented work requirements.
  • Maintain clear documentation of data definitions, query logic, methods, decisions, limitations, and final deliverables; contribute to established request-tracking and version-control processes.
  • Follow HIPAA, Institutional Review Board (IRB), data-use, and institutional requirements governing the access, storage, transmission, and use of clinical and research data.
  • Develop familiarity with evolving clinical data resources, medical concepts, and informatics procedures through guided training, collaboration, and professional development; provide team coverage and operational support within the assigned schedule; and, participate in relevant meetings and training.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

TERM APPOINTMENT; FUNDING AVAILABLE THROUGH 06/30/2027; CONTINUANCE BEYOND THAT DATE SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY OF ADDITIONAL FUNDING. The CTSC has received continuous funding for over two decades.
