Job Summary:

At Germantown Community Library, we believe in fostering curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning in children and families. Our Youth Services Department is committed to providing engaging, inspiring, and educational experiences focused towards our youngest patrons and as such we are seeking a creative, imaginative, initiative-oriented, and organized individual to join our team as a Youth Services Assistant. The Youth Services Assistant plays a key role in shaping the look, feel, and energy of our children’s area while also providing hands-on support to library patrons. This position balances social media responsibilities—such as content creation, community engagement, and advertising duties—with traditional Youth Services tasks such as assisting with children’s programming, guiding patrons to resources, and shelving.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This position is guaranteed 24 hours per week.
  • Create annual and monthly social media plans and content.
  • Align social media goals with the library's strategic plan.
  • Identify target audiences and engagement opportunities.
  • Stay current on social media trends and best practices.
  • Collaborate with the Youth Services team to create engaging visual and thematic content for seasonal and special events.
  • Assist patrons in locating books, multimedia, and other resources.
  • Use the LEAP system to create and manage library cards and patron accounts.
  • Support programming efforts, including story times, craft sessions, and special events.
  • Maintain organized and welcoming library spaces in the children’s department.
  • Collaborate with team members on projects and program planning.
  • Contribute ideas for innovative programs and community outreach.
  • Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library.
  • Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
  • Perform other activities as assigned.


Education and Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma or GED required,
  • 2 - 3 year library experience preferred
  • 2 - 3 years customer service experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of library systems and procedures (I.e. experience with LEAP) is a plus but not required.
  • Experience with Canva preferred
  • Experience with children in a public setting/customer service is preferred.
  • Experience with social media platforms (Discord, Facebook, Instagram, and Spotify) and analytics tools are required.
  • Experience with digital resources preferred (Libby, Kanapy, etc.)


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent listening and communication abilities.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong technology skills
  • Strong familiarity and skills with photography, videography, and Canva preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Words, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to work a schedule which will include weekend and evening work.


Work Environment:

  • Fast paced public library
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as the employee works in a library setting, using telephone and computer


Physical Demands:

  • Ability to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
  • The person in this position frequently communicates via telephone
