Part Time Software Engineer Reddit information

How do part-time software engineers at Reddit typically collaborate with full-time team members, and what tools are commonly used to stay aligned?

Part-time software engineers at Reddit work closely with full-time staff through agile methodologies, often participating in regular stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews via remote collaboration tools. Communication is facilitated through platforms like Slack, Jira for task tracking, and GitHub for version control and code collaboration. Staying aligned requires proactive communication, clear documentation, and regular check-ins to ensure everyone is up-to-date despite varying schedules. This approach helps part-time engineers remain integrated with the team and contribute effectively to ongoing projects.

Will AI replace developers in 2026?

Part-time software engineers and developers will continue to play a vital role in creating, testing, and maintaining AI systems. While AI tools can automate certain coding tasks, human oversight, problem-solving, and creativity remain essential for complex software development. Therefore, AI is more likely to augment rather than fully replace developers by 2026.

What is L1, L2, L3, and L4 developer?

In software engineering, L1, L2, L3, and L4 typically refer to different levels of developer experience and responsibility, with L1 being entry-level and L4 being senior or lead roles. These levels often correspond to skills, project complexity, and leadership expectations, and are used by companies to structure career progression and compensation. For a part-time software engineer, understanding these levels can help clarify job expectations and growth opportunities.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior software engineers, especially those working at large tech companies or in specialized fields like machine learning or cloud computing, can earn $500,000 or more annually. High compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, and typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills, and sometimes leadership roles.

Can computer engineers make $500,000?

Computer engineers can potentially earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with senior roles, specialized skills, or in high-paying industries like tech or finance. Achieving this level often requires extensive experience, advanced certifications, and working in leadership or highly technical positions.

What does a Part Time Software Engineer at Reddit do?

Part-time roles offer flexibility in scheduling, making them ideal for students, parents, or professionals seeking work-life balance. Responsibilities can range from coding and debugging to participating in code reviews and team meetings, depending on the team's specific needs.

Job description

Software Engineer
Job no: 536401
Work type: Hourly Wage/Part-Time
Senior management: College of Science
Department: Physics
Location: Blacksburg, Virginia
Categories: Information Systems / Technology
Job Description
The Department of Physics at Virginia Tech seeks multiple Wage Software Engineers to support the NSF-funded project "NSF POSE: Phase II: Ecosystem of the Applications and Libraries for Physics Simulations (ALPS)", a global, community-driven open-source software ecosystem used for quantum and classical physics simulations. ALPS supports a broad scientific community spanning condensed matter and materials physics, quantum computing, quantum chemistry, atomic/molecular optics, and related areas.
This position will focus on the software engineering work needed to establish and sustain the ALPS open-source software environment (OSE), including developer-facing infrastructure and user-facing resources. Key project goals include strengthening long-term sustainability through modern infrastructure and governance; improving maintainability and code quality via robust testing and release practices; establishing clear on-boarding protocols for new application codes (including wrapper standards and input/output standards); and expanding accessibility through documentation, tutorials, and training materials delivered through workshops and online channels.
The Software Engineer will collaborate with the distributed ALPS leadership and contributor community and will help implement and maintain ALPS development standards and tooling (e.g., repository workflows, testing and delivery practices, packaging/distribution, and user/developer support channels).
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent training and experience.
• Demonstrated ability to develop, test, and maintain software in one or more languages used for scientific/technical computing (e.g., Python, C/C++).
• Proficiency working in a Linux-based development environment.
• Demonstrated experience with collaborative version control workflows (e.g., Git/GitHub) and communicating changes through code reviews and issue tracking.
• Ability to communicate clearly with both developer and user communities and contribute to documentation and support materials.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience supporting open-source scientific software ecosystems (libraries/applications), including contributor on-boarding and interface design (APIs/wrappers).
• Experience with continuous integration/testing and release processes for multi-platform scientific codes.
• Experience with packaging/distribution (e.g., Python packaging) and/or HPC-facing distribution workflows.
• Experience developing or integrating user-facing support tooling (e.g., documentation sites, tutorials, or conversational/agent-style user assistance).
