HDR is seeking a technical specialist or subject matter expert on a part-time basis (20 hours or less per week) to be a Technical Advisor for our geotechnical engineering section that supports our expanding dams, levees and civil works business class within our Louisville, KY office. The primary duties of the Technical Advisor are to plan, execute, review and provide input on geotechnical engineering related tasks on assigned projects independently and collaboratively. This position may be required to review design and construction submittals for geotechnical compliance with applicable codes, design standards, project requirements, and contract documents. The applicant must be familiar with geotechnical investigations and design activities for dams, levees, hydraulic structures and civil works projects and will be involved in communication with both internal and external clients.
Candidate must be able to independently make decisions and recommendations that will impact a project's activities and direction. Candidate will be a technical expert, leader, and authority in projects and tasks involving geotechnical engineering focusing on dams, levees and civil works projects. Candidate should be knowledgeable of today's technical standards, including but not limited to USACE, USBR and FERC. Typically this position requires 20 plus years of experience, with a preferred emphasis on geotechnical engineering on dams, levees, hydraulic structures and civil works.
This individual is required to exhibit excellent communication skills, ability to work collaboratively with team members and clients and the demonstrated expertise in managing several complex tasks simultaneously. This individual must possess a Kentucky Professional Engineering license and have 20 plus years of experience in most aspects of geotechnical technical analyses. This Candidate will be responsible for working directly with the local area Dams, Levees and Civil Works section.
Preferred Qualifications
• MSCE degree or higher in geotechnical engineering with a minimum of 20+ years of demonstrated experience geotechnical engineering and in the specific field of dams, levees, hydraulic structures, civil works projects.
• Professional Engineering (PE) license in KY
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, required
• Proficient with geotechnical software including gINT, Slope/W, Seep /W, Settle3D (or other settlement software)
• Experienced with the review of other's work for compliance with project technical requirements as applied on project submittals, required
• Ability to independently complete and/or coordinate analyses associated with settlement, slope stability and embankment design, foundation design for dams and levees, familiarity with piping requirements for dams and levees.
• Successful candidate will have an attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture. Project Management experience a plus. Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to work in a team environment. Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Travel is required to perform work on an as-needed basis.

  • 10 years of experience
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, GIS, and CADD, as appropriate
  • Experience with GeoStudio/Ensoft slope stability, settlement, seepage, and deep foundation response software, as appropriate
  • Experience with Bentley suite of geotechnical data management and visualization software (gINT/OpenGround/LeapFrog)
  • Knowledge of advanced numerical modeling techniques such as Finite Difference, Finite Element, Discrete Element, etc. and commercial software for advanced numerical modeling (Bentley, PLAXIS, Itasca FLAC)
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
