What Does a Part-Time Software Developer Do?

Part-time software developers can be involved in a wide variety of projects and technologies. Depending on the programming languages and frameworks with which you are familiar, you might code and debug anything from mobile applications to network management and monitoring programs. As the complexity and sophistication of computer systems increases, so does the variety of applications software developers can create. As a part-time software developer, your duties and responsibilities require you to design, troubleshoot, test, and deploy applications and systems. Some positions offer flexible schedules and the option to work from home, while others require you to work at the company’s facilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Software Developer, you need proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), a solid grasp of software development principles, and typically a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and cloud-based collaboration tools is highly beneficial. Effective time management, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help you deliver quality work efficiently in a flexible or remote setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for meeting project goals, collaborating with teams, and maintaining productivity despite reduced hours.

Is it true that AI will replace software engineers?

AI is transforming software development by automating repetitive tasks and assisting with coding, but it is unlikely to fully replace software engineers. Human skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and understanding user needs remain essential, especially in designing complex systems and ensuring quality. Software engineers will continue to adapt by working alongside AI tools and focusing on higher-level development activities.

Can you work part-time as a programmer?

Part-time software developers work fewer hours than full-time employees, often around 20 hours per week, and may be hired for specific projects or to supplement a team. Many companies offer flexible schedules, and skills in programming languages, version control, and remote collaboration tools are important for success in part-time roles.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced software engineers, especially those in senior or specialized roles such as machine learning engineers or software architects at large tech companies, can earn $500,000 or more annually. These roles often require advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes stock options or bonuses as part of compensation packages.

Can developers work part-time?

Yes, many software developers work part-time, often to balance other commitments or gain flexible schedules. Part-time roles typically involve fewer hours per week and may require proficiency in specific programming languages, tools, or remote work arrangements.

What is a Part Time Software Developer?

A Part Time Software Developer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications while working fewer hours than a full-time employee, typically less than 35-40 hours per week. These developers may work for a single company or take on multiple projects for different clients. Part time roles can offer flexibility for students, parents, or those seeking work-life balance, while still allowing them to contribute technical skills to software development projects.

How do part-time software developers typically integrate with full-time teams and ongoing projects?

Part-time software developers often collaborate closely with full-time team members by participating in regular stand-up meetings, code reviews, and using project management tools to stay aligned with project goals. They may focus on specific tasks or modules that can be completed within their available hours, but communication is key to ensuring a smooth workflow. While balancing limited hours can be challenging, most teams provide flexibility and clear documentation to support part-time contributors. This integration allows part-time developers to make meaningful contributions without compromising project momentum.

Job description

Summary:
Client Service Execution Lead

Remote | Fixed-Term Opportunity | 20–40 Hours per Week

Bickert Management Inc. (BMI) is seeking an intelligent, resourceful, and resilient person to lead a small remote team responsible for implementing and improving Zoho-based business systems for our clients.

This is primarily a people leadership and service execution role, not a software development position. Prior Zoho experience, technical credentials, and formal management education are not required. We already have strong technical expertise within our team. We need someone who can lead capable people, clarify expectations, maintain accountability, organize work, remove obstacles, and continually improve how our services are executed.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Supervise an initial team of approximately two or three technicians and developers, potentially growing to five.

  • Assign work, establish priorities and deadlines, and follow up consistently.

  • Conduct regular performance discussions and candid monthly evaluations.

  • Address underperformance directly and help team members find a path to success.

  • Provide meaningful input into hiring, internship conversions, team composition, and termination decisions.

  • Review client meeting transcripts, notes, and process descriptions.

  • Help translate client objectives into clear, actionable tasks for technical team members.

  • Use AI, process-mapping tools, documentation, and internal frameworks to organize work.

  • Identify delays, waste, confusion, duplication, and avoidable rework.

  • Improve workflows, templates, best practices, and service execution efficiency.

  • Support client communication and Client Success activities where appropriate.

Success will be measured through happy and retained clients, increased adoption of BMI services, stronger team performance, and demonstrable improvements in the efficiency and consistency of our work.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Honest, intelligent, organized, dependable, and highly resourceful.

  • Comfortable leading people with greater technical knowledge than their own.

  • Courageous enough to give candid feedback and hold people accountable.

  • Resilient and able to receive criticism or disagreement without taking it personally.

  • Able to work through ambiguity and changing priorities.

  • Skilled at turning broad discussions into organized next steps.

  • Committed to continuous improvement rather than simply maintaining existing practices.

  • An effective real-time communicator with strong professional written English.

  • Comfortable using AI and large language models to improve communication and productivity.

  • Able to learn unfamiliar software and business systems quickly.

We welcome nontraditional candidates. Relevant ability may have been developed through formal leadership, entrepreneurship, sales, coaching, agriculture, military service, operations, community involvement, or an entirely different background. Degrees, titles, and conventional career paths matter less to us than demonstrated judgment, character, follow-through, and leadership potential.

Working Arrangement

This is a fully remote position requiring meaningful availability during North American business hours. Alignment with Mountain Time is ideal. The schedule has some flexibility, but this is not a fully asynchronous, work-whenever-you-prefer role.

BMI is open to both part-time and full-time candidates, with an anticipated commitment of approximately 20 to 40 hours per week. The successful candidate may be engaged as either a direct BMI employee or an independent contractor.

This is initially a fixed-term opportunity, with the possibility of continued, permanent, reduced, or evolving work depending on organizational needs, performance, and fit.

Candidates must provide their own suitable computer, webcam, headset, private workspace, and reliable internet connection of at least 300 Mbps. BMI provides the required Zoho software licenses and may provide access to an approved large language model.

About BMI

BMI helps organizations improve their operations through Zoho business software, CRM, automation, analytics, process design, and technology implementation.

Our culture is collaborative, casual, candid, and improvement-oriented. Team members have access to colleagues across the organization and are encouraged to challenge inefficient methods, refine best practices, and meaningfully influence how the company operates.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in BMI’s structured assessment and selection process.
