What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Software Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Software Architect, you need deep expertise in software design principles, architecture patterns, and strong programming skills, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Experience with tools like UML, architectural modeling software, cloud platforms, and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect) is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to collaborate efficiently with diverse teams are vital soft skills. These competencies are crucial for designing scalable, maintainable systems and ensuring successful project outcomes within limited working hours.

What does a Part Time Software Architect do?

A Part Time Software Architect is responsible for designing and overseeing the structure of software systems, but works on a reduced or flexible schedule rather than full-time. They collaborate with stakeholders to define technical requirements, create high-level architectural solutions, and guide development teams in implementing best practices. This role often involves reviewing code, ensuring scalability and security, and making strategic technology decisions, all while managing their time across fewer hours per week.

How does a part-time software architect typically balance project responsibilities with limited working hours?

Part-time software architects are expected to focus on high-impact tasks such as defining system architecture, setting technical direction, and mentoring developers, while collaborating closely with project managers and full-time team members. They usually participate in key meetings, code reviews, and architectural decision-making, ensuring their limited hours are used efficiently. Clear communication and well-documented design choices are essential to maintain alignment with the team and ensure smooth progress even when they're not present. This structure allows part-time architects to contribute significant expertise without being involved in every detail of day-to-day implementation.

Software Architect
The Opportunity:
Are you looking for an opportunity to apply your technical leadership and architecture expertise to shape the future of national security SATCOM? You understand complex mission environments, evolving requirements, and how software must integrate across ground, space, and cyber domains. Your ability to translate user needs into technical architectures, interface definitions, and DevSecOps-aligned solutions makes you an essential part of delivering resilient SATCOM capabilities.
As a Software Architect on our Strategic SATCOM team, you'll help the U.S. Space Force build and modernize mission-critical systems that enable global communications and decision superiority. You'll design software architectures using model-based engineering, define open-system interfaces, drive modernization strategies, and guide development teams toward secure, scalable solutions. You'll lead architecture reviews, evaluate technology options, create digital engineering artifacts, and deliver recommendations to government decision makers.
You'll collaborate with software developers, cyber engineers, SATCOM operators, systems engineers, and acquisition leads to ensure the architecture remains aligned with mission needs and integrates effectively with the broader SATCOM enterprise. You'll also apply Zero Trust principles, support RMF activities, and help ensure cyber resilience throughout the architecture.
At Booz Allen, you'll grow your expertise through hands-on mission support, access to emerging technologies, continuous learning opportunities, and the ability to pursue in-demand certifications. Your career is only limited by your appetite for impact.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 7+ years of experience in software architecture, enterprise software design, or digital engineering
  • 5+ years of experience with SATCOM, space systems, ground systems, or C2 software environments

  • Experience developing Interface Control Documents (ICDs), service decompositions, and API definitions
  • Experience designing cloud-native architectures, microservices, containers, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience aligning architecture with cybersecurity frameworks and working in Agile environments or SAFe
  • Knowledge of secure coding and Zero Trust-aligned design principles
  • TS/SCI clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience supporting MILSATCOM programs, Protected Tactical SATCOM (PTS), or similar DoD systems
  • Experience with MBSE tools such as Cameo, MagicDraw, Rhapsody, or Sparx EA
