What is a part time server?

Part time servers are restaurant or food service employees who work fewer hours than full-time staff, typically under 30-35 hours per week. Their main responsibilities include taking orders, serving food and drinks, answering customer questions, and ensuring guests have a pleasant dining experience. Part time servers often work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, or holidays, depending on the needs of the establishment. This role is ideal for students or individuals seeking supplemental income while having time for other commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time server?

To thrive as a Part Time Server, you need customer service skills, basic math ability, and knowledge of food safety, often acquired through on-the-job training or a food handler certificate. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and order management software is typically required. Exceptional communication, multitasking, and teamwork skills help servers deliver a positive dining experience and handle busy shifts. These skills ensure efficient service, customer satisfaction, and smooth restaurant operations.

What are some common challenges faced by part time servers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Part-time servers often juggle varying shifts, high customer volumes during peak hours, and the need to multitask efficiently. Managing these challenges involves strong time management, clear communication with team members, and maintaining a positive attitude even during busy periods. Building good relationships with coworkers and staying organized can help make fast-paced shifts more manageable and enjoyable.

To become a part-time server with no experience, focus on demonstrating good communication skills, a friendly attitude, and a willingness to learn. Many restaurants hire entry-level staff and provide on-the-job training, so applying to local establishments and highlighting your customer service enthusiasm can improve your chances.

Job description

Description:

Who We Are

At Hawkers Asian Street Food, our purpose is simple: we spark adventure. Everything we do is driven by three mantras that define who we are and how we show up every day. We always care — for each and every guest as if they are our only guest, and for our team as family. We never compromise — paying attention to the details and maximizing the potential in every team member and every experience. And we be disruptive — challenging the status quo, refusing to succumb to industry norms, and continually raising the bar.

If you’re ready to bring that spirit to work every single day, we want you on our team.

Position Summary

The Server Assistant (SA) is a key contributor to the energy and flow of the dining room. You will work alongside our servers and front-of-house team to ensure every guest enjoys a seamless, clean, and welcoming experience from the moment they sit down to the moment they leave. This role is fast-paced, team-oriented, and perfect for someone who thrives in a high-energy restaurant environment.

Availability must include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Both part-time and full-time schedules are available.

Requirements:
  • Greet guests warmly as they are seated and assist servers with bringing beverages and initial table needs.
  • Clear and reset tables quickly and efficiently after guests depart, ensuring the dining room is always guest-ready.
  • Transport used tableware, glassware, and silverware to the dish room and place items in the appropriate areas for washing.
  • Clean and sanitize tabletops, chairs, and booths between seatings.
  • Run food and drinks to tables as directed by servers and managers.
  • Respond to guest requests promptly and communicate needs to the server immediately.
  • Inspect and clean assigned restrooms as needed throughout the shift.
  • Support the host team with restroom restocking responsibilities.
  • Assist with ongoing side work and opening/closing duties as assigned.
  • Thank guests as they leave and contribute to a positive, welcoming atmosphere throughout the shift.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in scheduling to support the smooth operation of the restaurant.
  • Collaborate with all team members and step in to help wherever needed — we succeed together.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by restaurant management.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age (required due to alcohol service environment).
  • Prior restaurant or hospitality experience preferred but not required — we will train the right person.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Food Handler’s Certification prior to or within 30 days of hire.
  • Must understand and follow all OSHA and HACCP compliance standards.
  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and genuine passion for hospitality.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Reliable transportation and consistent availability including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

  • Ability to stand and walk for the duration of a shift (typically 4–8 hours).
  • Frequent bending, squatting, reaching above shoulder level, and twisting.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. regularly.
  • Ability to work in a loud, fast-paced environment with varying temperatures.
  • Manual dexterity required to handle dishes, glassware, and utensils safely.
