Job description

We are seeking a Senior Engineering Technician (Cyber Security) to act as a technical lead for cyber security across the Operational Technology (OT) environment, ensuring the protection and resilience of critical infrastructure. This position combines hands-on network monitoring and incident response with strategic security enhancements. You’ll bring deep expertise in Industrial Control System (ICS), SCADA networking and security, along with strong experience configuring switches, routers, and firewalls (including EIGRP and BGP routing). Partnering with IT Security and key stakeholders, you’ll drive the design, evolution, and modernization of Metropolitan’s SCADA communications infrastructure. 

What You’ll Do 

  • Monitor and defend the SCADA environments by identifying threats, investigating alerts and leading timely incident responses. 

  • Enhance the overall security architecture and controls through firewall administration, security validation, and implementation of OT Cybersecurity best practices. 

  • Communicate and collaborate with the team to resolve security issues, enhance security management and implementing the security playbook.  

  • Contribute to and develop the security playbook and documentation to strengthen compliance, response readiness and operational consistency across the team.  

  • Proactively identify vulnerabilities by testing existing and new tools, evaluating vendors, correlating events and driving continuous security improvements through the security plan.  

  • Partner with IT Security and consultants to perform security audits and investigations, identify, resolve and document security weaknesses.  

  • Develop and maintain technical standards, documentation, and procedures while mentoring junior staff and promoting operational excellence in OT Cybersecurity.

Schedule: 44/36. Start times are no earlier than 6 am and end times are no later than 6 pm. 

Hybrid: Metropolitan’s current practice in this position is a hybrid work schedule. This typically includes two days a week in person and the other days remote. This is subject to change dependent on organizational needs. In addition, a telework policy is scheduled for negotiations and once completed and implemented, will provide final direction on the hybrid schedule. 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Education and Experience: High school diploma or high school equivalency certificate (HSEC), and two years of accredited college or university in engineering.  

AND eight years of relevant experience, two years of which must have been at the Engineering Technician III level. 

Relevant/Related Experience is defined as: Work experience in a combination of configuring network equipment and cybersecure environments.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS 

Employees in this position may be required to obtain and maintain the following certifications, licensing and registrations: 

License(s): Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent that allows you to drive during your employment is required at time of application.
