Position Summary

The Saw Operator is responsible for operating industrial saws (band saw, cold saw, chop saw, or similar equipment) to cut metal materials to required lengths and specifications. This role ensures accurate measurements, safe machine operation, and proper material handling to support production and fabrication schedules.


Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate saws to cut metal bars, pipes, tubes, structural steel, and other materials.
  • Read and interpret work orders, cut lists, blueprints, and job travelers.
  • Select proper blades based on material type and thickness.
  • Adjust saw speed, feed rates, and guides for optimal cutting performance.
  • Monitor cutting operations to ensure accuracy, consistency, and quality.
  • Measure materials before and after cutting using tape measures and other tools.
  • Verify dimensions and tolerances match customer or production requirements.
  • Inspect materials for defects or incorrect specifications.
  • Ensure clean, straight, and burr-free cuts.
  • Load and unload materials using forklifts, overhead cranes, pallet jacks, or other equipment
  • Properly stage, tag, and label cut materials for the next production step.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of cut quantities and material usage.
  • Perform routine saw maintenance, including cleaning, blade changes, lubrication, and safety checks.
  • Ensure work area is clean, organized, and free of hazards.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including machine-guarding, PPE requirements, and safe lifting practices.
  • Immediately report equipment issues, blade damage, or unsafe conditions to the Supervisor.
  • Meet production deadlines by organizing work efficiently and maintaining consistent output.
  • Coordinate with Fabrication, Machine Shop, or Warehouse teams regarding material needs.
  • Assist with general shop tasks when needed.
Requirements:

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 1+ year of experience operating industrial saws or working in a fabrication environment preferred
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, cut lists, and work instructions.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screenings and background checks
  • Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and teamwork.


Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods (8+ hours)
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 lbs. independently
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and manual handling of materials required
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
  • Ability to tolerate noise, heat, and dust in a manufacturing environment
  • Visual acuity to read measuring tools, drawings, and detect quality defects
  • Must pass initial and ongoing physical or occupational health screenings (e.g., lifting assessment, vision test, hearing test, etc.)
  • Must be able to wear required PPE, including steel-toe boots, gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection


Work Environment


Manufacturing floor with exposure to moving mechanical parts, sharp materials, and moderate to loud noise. May be exposed to hot or cold environments depending on season. Work schedule may include overtime, weekend shifts, or on-call schedules as needed.
