Job description

We're Looking for an experienced Actuarial Associate!

About the Company:
Security Benefit is a leader in the U.S. retirement market with more than $60 billion in assets under management. We offer opportunities to thrive, innovate, and make an impact. As part of our team, you’ll play a key role in driving the future of the U.S. retirement industry. Security Benefit is a PLACE where we promise to help our customers To and Through Retirement®.

We’re proud to have been recognized as one of the best in the business:

  • Named to Ward’s 50 list of top-performing life-health insurance companies
  • Recognized on list of Ingram’s Top 100 Private Companies in the Kansas City area in 2024

About the Role:
As an Actuarial Associate, ERM & Planning you will serve as the core production resource within the Risk & Planning actuarial cluster, responsible for developing, maintaining, and executing Prophet-based financial projection models that support the Company’s Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA), CISSA filings, capital planning, and enterprise stress testing activities across Security Benefit Life and an offshore reinsurer. You will own day-to-day production timelines independently, working in close partnership with the part-time Associate Actuary and delivering modeled outputs to the Senior ERM Analyst for ORSA report integration — ultimately reviewed by the ERM Committee and signed by the VP & Chief Risk Officer.

This position reports to an Actuary of Risk and Planning and is based out of our home office in Topeka or Overland Park, Kansas. We are open to remote for the right candidate. SB associates work in a hybrid environment with both remote and on-site work.

  • Develop, maintain, and execute complex Prophet-based financial projection models supporting ORSA, CISSA, capital planning, and enterprise risk management activities across Security Benefit Life and the offshore reinsurer
  • Own day-to-day execution of multi-year financial projections, stress testing scenarios, and capital adequacy analyses — maintaining progress and meeting deadlines independently, including on days when the part-time Associate Actuary is not scheduled
  • Perform asset-liability management (ALM) analyses by incorporating asset projections, reinvestment strategies, and investment assumptions into enterprise financial projections
  • Prepare and validate economic scenarios, model inputs, actuarial assumptions, model point files, and actuarial tables; evaluate the impact of market, interest rate, credit, and policyholder behavior risks on financial results, capital adequacy, and RBC metrics
  • Produce actuarial projection outputs for the annual ORSA filing for SBL and the offshore reinsurer, delivering modeled results to the Senior ERM Analyst on schedule for report integration
  • Translate complex modeling outputs into clear, decision-ready summaries for the Actuary and CRO ahead of ERM Committee review
  • Coordinate with cross-functional partners including Finance, Investments, and Legal to obtain accurate inputs and align on planning assumptions; escalate modeling issues, timeline risks, or assumption conflicts to the Actuary, ERM & Planning in a timely manner
  • Improve modeling efficiency through automation and process enhancements; create and maintain clear model documentation supporting team continuity, knowledge transfer, and audit readiness

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, or a related quantitative field
  • ASA designation or demonstrated exam progress toward ASA
  • 3+ years of actuarial experience, preferably in financial modeling, financial projections, asset-liability management (ALM), valuation, or related actuarial functions
  • Strong production ownership: manages modeling workload independently and meets deadlines without requiring daily oversight
  • Strong technical communication skills: translates actuarial model results into clear summaries for the Actuary and CRO
  • Experience with actuarial projection and financial modeling software, including Prophet or similar platforms (preferred)
  • Familiarity with ORSA, CISSA, stress testing, capital planning, and enterprise risk management concepts (preferred)
  • Knowledge of life insurance and annuity products, including fixed and indexed annuities (preferred)
  • Programming experience with Python, SQL, VBA, or similar analytical tools (preferred)
  • Exposure to multi-entity, reinsurance, captive, or offshore insurance structures including BMA and CIMA-regulated entities (preferred)

Why Choose Security Benefit?
When you join our team, you’re not just getting a paycheck — you’re getting a career path full of growth opportunities, plus a robust benefits package that puts your well-being first. Here’s what you can expect as a full-time Security Benefit associate:

  • Competitive salary and annual incentive bonuses to reward your contributions.
  • 33 days of paid time off (including PTO, holidays, Volunteer Day, and days of significance).
  • Paid parental leave after 90 days of service.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental & vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match, plus Profit Sharing & Savings Plan.
  • Short- and Long-Term Disability Insurance to give you peace of mind.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts for medical and dependent care.
  • Life Insurance to protect your loved ones.
  • Educational assistance to support your career development.
