Reading Interventionist (Part -Time)

Location: William Randolph Campus (Grades 6-12)
Reports To: Program Administrator
FLSA Status: Exempt
Employment Term: 10-Month Certified Position, Part-Time (50%)
Salary: According to the Asheville City Schools Teacher Salary Schedule and applicable local supplement




Position Summary

The Reading Interventionist provides targeted academic support to middle school students who require additional assistance in literacy. Working collaboratively with classroom teachers, instructional coaches, administrators, and support staff, the Interventionist designs and implements evidence-based interventions that accelerate student learning, close achievement gaps, and support students in meeting grade-level standards.

The Interventionist uses student data to identify learning needs, monitor progress, and adjust instruction accordingly. This position serves as a key member of the school's Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework and is responsible for helping ensure equitable access to academic success for all students.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Support and Intervention

  • Provide direct, small-group, and individual intervention services in readingto students identified through school-based data and MTSS processes.
  • Deliver evidence-based intervention programs aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and district instructional goals.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic needs of students.
  • Utilize research-based strategies to improve literacy skills, including reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, writing, and foundational reading skills.
  • Support students in developing confidence, engagement, and academic independence.

Data Analysis and Progress Monitoring

  • Analyze assessment data, benchmark results, classroom performance, and other relevant indicators to identify students requiring intervention services.
  • Develop intervention plans with measurable goals and progress-monitoring benchmarks.
  • Conduct regular progress monitoring and maintain accurate documentation of student growth.
  • Use data to make instructional decisions and adjust interventions as needed.
  • Assist with the identification and monitoring of students receiving Tier II and Tier III supports.

Collaboration and Consultation

  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, counselors, and support staff to identify student needs and coordinate intervention services.
  • Participate in MTSS, Student Support Team (SST), and data review meetings.
  • Provide recommendations regarding instructional strategies and accommodations to support student success in the general education setting.
  • Assist teachers in interpreting assessment data and implementing interventions within the classroom.
  • Work closely with Exceptional Children (EC), English Learner (EL), and other specialized service providers to support student achievement.

Family and Community Engagement

  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress and intervention services.
  • Provide resources and strategies families can use to support literacy development at home.
  • Participate in parent conferences and school events as requested.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate student records, intervention logs, and documentation as required by district and state guidelines.
  • Participate in professional learning opportunities related to literacy, mathematics, intervention practices, MTSS, and adolescent learning.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and information.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and a commitment to Asheville City Schools' mission and values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong knowledge of adolescent literacy instructional practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid North Carolina teaching license in Middle Grades Education, Elementary Education, Reading Education, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience using student data to drive instructional decisions.
  • Strong background in literacy instruction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Reading Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Reading Specialist licensure or certification.
  • Experience implementing intervention programs and MTSS frameworks.
  • Experience working with middle school students.
  • Training in evidence-based literacy intervention programs.
  • Experience with progress-monitoring tools and data analysis systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the school environment for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and interact with students in various school settings.
  • Ability to use standard office and instructional technology equipment.

Performance Responsibilities

Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the North Carolina Educator Evaluation System, Asheville City Schools policies, and district expectations.
