PHARMACY TECHNICIAN - CERTIFIED
FLSA Employment Status: Nonexempt/Hourly
JOB SUMMARY
Under supervision of the Director of Pharmacy and/or staff pharmacists, the pharmacy technician fills orders for pharmaceuticals and intravenous solutions in accordance with state and federal codes and regulations.
Reporting Structure: Reports to the Director of Pharmacy or on-duty staff pharmacist
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education
High School diploma or equivalent required
Completion of a formal pharmacy technician training program: preferred
Work Experience
One (1) year of experience in a hospital pharmacy setting: preferred
License/Certification
Current Tennessee Board of Pharmacy Pharmacy Technician Registration required
Current signed pharmacy technician affidavit required to be on file
Successful passing of nationally-recognized pharmacy technician certification/credentialing exam (such as Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Ensures availability of accurate pharmaceutical supplies to ancillary units by reading order and filling requisitions
If appropriate competencies have been completed: prepares intravenous solutions within standard protocol, utilizes aseptic technique, reads and interprets orders, calculates proper volume levels of additives needed, performs mathematical volume conversions, labels prepared solutions, cleans hood and buffer or segregated compounding areas, and restocks medications
Assists with the accurate and timely dispensing of daily patient medications by replenishing medicine cabinets for nursing units, carts for the long-term care facility and filling routine patient orders for pharmaceuticals
Assists with the accurate dispensing of retail prescriptions by entering data into computer such as new patient information and prescription information, processing insurance claims, navigating insurance rejections, accurately filling medications, taking new prescriptions over the phone, and taking/processing prescription transfers
Conducts rounds to all floors in order to deliver medications generated by new physician orders and to deliver intravenous solutions.
Assists with dispensing and control of narcotics by filling orders, recording narcotics dispensed, delivering narcotics to the floor and cabinets, matching daily narcotic receipts with controlled substance sheets, and performing a monthly narcotic cabinet inventory alongside a licensed pharmacist
Answers phone, responds to routine questions, and notifies the pharmacist(s) if needed
Counts, compounds, and repackages pharmaceuticals using established procedures
Processes admissions, transfers, and discharge information by adjusting patient data in computer, entering charges, changing medication cart to proper patient room, and retrieving sealed items back to inventory, if appropriate
Monitors supply levels, notifies appropriate staff if reorder is needed, rotates stock, and removes expired medications
Performs medication storage area inspections
Ensures main dispensing area and sterile compounding area are stocked adequately as appropriate
Shelves new stock, making sure that the manufacturer's storage requirements are observed
Monitors temperature devices, records temperatures, and reports applicable temperature variations
OTHER DUTIES
Performs other related duties as assigned to support achievement of department goals and objectives
