Our organization operates the California Research and Education Network (CalREN), a high-capacity computer network with more than 8,000 miles of optical fiber. The network serves over 20 million users across California, including the vast majority of K-20 students, together with educators, researchers, and individuals at other vital public-serving institutions.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a temporary student position that may be either part-time in the academic year. Applicants must be enrolled as a student at an accredited college or university at the time of hire. Reporting to the Manager, Information Security Office, the Information Security Intern is responsible for a broad range of general administrative support duties in multiple areas, including vulnerability management, ticket handling, updating security documentation, auditing network security monitoring tools, and other security audit and administrative tasks as assigned.


Students interested in this internship opportunity must be available a minimum of three (3) days per week for at least five (5) hours per day. Student interns cannot exceed twenty (20) work hours per week in the academic year. Interns must be available to work during standard business hours, Monday through Friday, between 8 am and 6 pm. Schedules can be adjusted as needed for classes as long as they remain during business hours. Total hours per week will be dependent on CENIC's business needs and may be changed by the supervisor at any time.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.

LOCATION: Hybrid

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  1. Documentation audits and updates

  2. Service desk ticket processing and updates

  3. Follow instructions for the use and operation of information security tools and services, such as Qualys VMDR, Zeek, nmap, tcpdump, and Wireshark

  4. Update risk management and vulnerability management tracking systems, as instructed

  5. Provide other assistance as CENIC's business needs dictate


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift moderately heavy (25 to 50 pounds) and heavy (over 50 pounds) objects, such as routers, switches, computers, and peripherals

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:

  2. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team-oriented environment

  3. Basic knowledge of IP-based networking

  4. Knowledge of regular expressions, data, and text manipulation tools such as awk and sed

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Information technology management or computer engineering education

  2. Basic knowledge of IP-based networking, including knowledge of routing protocols

  3. Familiarity with office productivity tools such as email, calendaring, Google Workspace, and MS Office applications

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position operates in a professional office environment with standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.


WORK HOURS:

The Information Security Office (ISO) operates weekdays from 8 AM to 5 PM PT but is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week/365 days a year for incident response needs. An employeeโ€™s work shift is based on CENICโ€™s business needs.


ISO Interns must be available a minimum of three (3) days per week for at least five (5) hours per day.
