Organization Overview

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent.

Position Overview

The Enrichment Assistant supports the delivery of engaging, standards-aligned STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) programming during the school day. Working closely with teachers, the incumbent assists in facilitating hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences that promote creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. The role includes providing whole class/group and individual student support, reinforcing literacy and numeracy skills, and helping integrate visual and digital media into student projects.

The Enrichment Assistant also helps maintain instructional materials, supports the use of school resources such as the library to expand students’ exposure to STEAM-related topics and careers, and contributes to a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment. This position requires strong collaboration with staff, active supervision of students across settings, and participation in school-wide procedures and professional learning.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support General Education Teachers in delivering engaging STEAM activities aligned to NGSS and Common Core
  • Assist students during hands-on, inquiry-based lessons and creative projects, including visual and digital media experiences
  • Provide small group and individual support to reinforce literacy, math, and academic vocabulary
  • Utilize the school library and available resources to help expose students to STEAM-related topics, careers, and real-world applications
  • Help prepare, organize, and maintain instructional materials and supplies, including art and media equipment
  • Monitor and support student behavior to ensure a safe, positive learning environment
  • Assist with documenting student participation and capturing student work for displays or showcases
  • Supervise students in classrooms, outdoor spaces, and during school activities or field trips
  • Follow classroom procedures and support consistent routines
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and school safety procedures
  • Collaborate effectively with staff and perform additional duties as assigned
